Pianist-composer Yelena Eckemoff deploys her most elaborate but also her most ambitious musical work with Adventures of the Wildflower, which will be released on March 19, 2021. As its title suggests, this double album is the story of a life, from birth to death (and rebirth), of an anthropomorphic columbine flower. Its story is told through the inspired work of Yelena Eckemoff and a Finnish ensemble that includes saxophonist Jukka Perko, multi-instrumentalist Jarmo Saari, vibraphonist Panu Savolainen, bassist Antti Lötjönen and drummer / percussionist Olavi Louhivuori. Of course, the talented Yelena has a broad classical culture, but the most striking is certainly her poetic inspiration which is felt in the writing of the works. It is also interesting to look at what Yelena Eckemoff tells us about this work:“I was intrigued to learn that plants communicate with each other in the air, releasing odorous chemicals, and in the soil, by secreting soluble chemicals. Such community life sparked my imagination. I began to imagine how a single plant could be part of such an interconnected community and how its neighbors who lived nearby would react. And then I was inspired by the idea of ​​a wild flower. ”

Native of Russia and living in the USA since 1991, Yelena Eckemoff wanted with Adventures of the Wildflower to make an offering of positivity to her adopted country: “I was moved to make this record as my answer to our turbulent times”, she tells us.“I believe that nothing is more important for all beings than to find a way to live together peacefully, one beside the other, in the same community. The characters in my story may have disagreements with each other, but in the end they always find a way to coexist together on the same piece of land. ”

Adventures of the Wildflower is a fascinating, intelligent, humanistic work, and a great intellectual and artistic prowess. So many qualities which allow this album to rise on the “Indispensable” shelf, as the editors of Paris-Move and Bayou Blue Radio unanimously wish.

Comme son titre suggère, ce double album est l’histoire d’une vie, de la naissance à la mort (et renaissance), d’une fleur d’ancolie anthropomorphe. Son histoire est racontée par le travail inspiré de Yelena Eckemoff et d’un ensemble finlandais qui comprend le saxophoniste Jukka Perko, le multi-instrumentiste Jarmo Saari, le vibraphoniste Panu Savolainen, le bassiste Antti Lötjönen et le batteur/ percussionniste Olavi Louhivuori. Bien entendu, il y a chez la talentueuse Yelena une large culture classique, mais le plus marquant est certainement son inspiration poétique qui se ressent dans l’écriture des œuvres. Il est d’ailleurs intéressant de se pencher sur ce que nous raconte Yelena Eckemoff au sujet de cette œuvre: “J’ai été intriguée d’apprendre que les plantes communiquent entre elles dans l’air, en libérant des produits chimiques odorants, et dans le sol, en sécrétant des produits chimiques solubles. Une telle vie communautaire a suscité mon imagination. J’ai commencé à imaginer comment une seule plante pouvait faire partie d’une communauté aussi interconnectée et comment allaient réagir ses voisins qui vivaient à côté. Et j’ai eu alors comme source d’inspiration l’idée d’une fleur sauvage.”

Native de Russie et installée aux USA depuis 1991, Yelena Eckemoff a voulu avec Adventures of the Wildflower faire une offrande de positivité à son pays d’adoption: “J’ai été émue de faire ce disque comme ma réponse à nos temps turbulents”, nous dit-elle. “Je crois que rien n’est plus important pour tous les êtres que de trouver un moyen de vivre ensemble paisiblement, les uns à côté des autres, dans la même communauté. Les personnages de mon histoire peuvent avoir des désaccords les uns avec les autres, mais à la fin ils trouvent toujours un moyen de coexister ensemble sur la même parcelle de terre.”

Adventures of the Wildflower est une œuvre fascinante, intelligente, humaniste, et une belle prouesse intellectuelle et artistique. Autant de qualités qui permettent à cet album de se hisser sur l’étagère des “Indispensable”, comme le souhaitent à l’unanimité les rédactions de Paris-Move et Bayou Blue Radio.
