YELENA ECKEMOFF Better Than Gold And Silver (L&H/in-akustik)
Russian pianist Yelena Eckemoff releases at least two CDs every year. But this double CD is particularly dear to her heart, because she began setting psalms to music when she was still living in the Soviet Union (she has been living in the USA for years). The cast of her sextet is – as usual with Eckemoff – ready for the first league with scene stars like Ralph Alessi, Drew Gress, Ben Monder and Joey Baron. On the first CD tenor Tomäs Cruz and mezzo-soprano Kim Mayo sing the ten psalms with sextet accompaniment, on the second CD there are (mostly much longer) instrumental versions, which is why the listener has to struggle with a good 15o minutes of music. The ensemble’s sound, literally shaped by role models such as Eberhard Weber, Arild Andersen and Tomasz Stanko, which owes much to the sound aesthetics of ECM, is brilliant thanks to the sound engineers James Farber and Owen Mulholland, but a slight feeling of satiety is still present by the middle of the second CD at the latest – the next albums with Manu Katche and Thomas Stronen are already announced in the booklet. rt

Die russische Pianistin Yelena Eckemoff haut Jahr für Jahr mindestens zwei CDs raus. Aber diese Doppel-CD liegt ihr besonders am Herzen, denn mit der Vertonung von Psalmen begann sie bereits, als sie noch in der Sowjetunion lebte (seit Jahren ist sie in den USA ansässig). Die Besetzung ihres Sextetts ist — wie bei Eckemoff üblich — mit Szenestars wie Ralph Alessi, Drew Gress, Ben Monder und Joey Baron erstligareif. Auf der ersten CD singen Tenor Tomäs Cruz und Mezzosopran Kim Mayo die zehn Psalmen mit Sextettbegleitung, auf der zweiten CD finden sich (meist wesentlich längere) Instrumentalfassungen, weshalb der Hörer mit gut 15o Minuten Musik zu kämpfen hat. Der buchstäblich von Vorbildern wie Eberhard Weber, Arild Andersen und Tomasz Stanko geprägte Sound des Ensembles, der der Klangästhetik von ECM viel zu verdanken hat, ist dank den Toningenieuren James Farber und Owen Mulholland brillant, ein leichtes Sättigungsgefühl stellt sich spätestens Mitte der zweiten CD dennoch ein — die nächsten Alben mit Manu Katche und Thomas Stronen werden im Booklet bereits angekündigt. rt
