Pianist, composer, bandleader and producer Yelena Eckemoff has released albums under various titles and formats. Scenes From The Dark Ages, the latest work by the Moscow-born artist currently based in the US, bears only her name, accompanied by a quintet of brilliant musicians on a journey that fuses progressive jazz, symphonic rock, classical music and medieval references into an intricate, rich and multicolored tapestry of sounds. Despite being the sole creator of the project, Eckemoff opts for a curiously collective approach: the piano and organ, instead of asserting themselves as virtuoso center, take on the role of spiritual guides – they guide, organize and bring together – while the remaining musicians explore their instruments with freedom and passion, in a dynamic that oscillates between erudition and spontaneous combustion. Divided into two discs, the album is a true instrumental narrative that unfolds like an epic. On CD 1, we find moments of great improvisational expansion, such as in Pilgrims and Village Tavern, where the solos follow one another in a completely free manner. From Peasants Life immerses itself in a more contemplative, almost meditative atmosphere, as if echoing from the monastic Himalayas. Spell-Bound Fortress is one of the highlights: an epic battle between classical and jazz, with a central section that pulses with contagious energy. Monks In Scriptorium evokes Viennese salons, with echoes of Strauss, and Cathedral resorts to the solemnity of religious music. Legends Of The Castle, in turn, recaptures the jazz spirit in an exploratory, free, almost mystical mode. CD 2 opens with the vibrant Adventures Of A Knight, a true jazz cavalcade, followed by the very short and electrifying Battle. Chivalry slows down the pace and immerses itself in a knightly serenity, while Tournament once again brings vibrant energy. Masquerade is undoubtedly one of the most captivating moments: a baroque and medieval journey where a gypsy violin sets the air ablaze. Alchemist continues the alchemical spirit of the fusion between classicism and improvisation. And in the final tracks, Quest and From The Life Of The Lords, we hear the rhythm section breathing jazz with an organ that brings back the sacred ambience to the end of the journey. There is something miraculous in knowing that this double album was recorded in just three days. The complexity of the arrangements, the interaction between the musicians and the wealth of styles used — from folk to baroque, from jazz to sacred music, from rock to medieval music — make Scenes From The Dark Ages a unique piece in the contemporary panorama.
