We met at Jazzahead – sometime around 2017! She started composing her own songs when she was just 4 years old. She started studying jazz when she was 20 and recorded her first jazz album in 2008 with Peter Erskine. She even played in an experimental jazz-rock band. In an exclusive interview from 2019, she presented us with her musical development and experiences during her youth in her homeland and gave us her unique insight into her world of musical expression and composition. Pianist of Russian origin, Yelena Eckemoff emigrated to the USA, where she is one of the most interesting and prominent personalities. In her music, she combines her experience with classical music and jazz. Her music is full of lyricism and emotions, with the songs often telling a story. Her style could also be described as jazz impressionism. And now I will introduce you to the jubilee twentieth – a double-disc set, entitled Scenes from the Dark Ages, which she recorded with Italian musicians and one rare guest. Yelena’s latest album is not an interpretation of the stylistic elements of early music with a touch of modern jazz. In her compositions, Yelena rather combines the structures of classical music and her own melodies with various rhythmic and stylistic innovations of 21st century jazz, fusion and world music. Moreover, she brings her own enthusiasm for interpreting and performing this unique material to every moment. Yelena says: “I dreamed of being born in the Middle Ages” and continues: “This project is so different from my others because it has a prog-rock feel. I didn’t just want guitar and bass, but rock guitar and electric bass and a really strong drum kit. On this record, I play not only the piano, but also medieval instruments such as the organ, clavichord, harpsichord and celesta. I also wanted violin and flute, and I think this slightly unconventional instrumentation adds another dimension to the music.” If you listen carefully, my friends, these musical stories are intoxicating and hypnotic at times. “This project embodied my reborn childhood dream of the Middle Ages – as I imagined it after all those wonderful illustrated fairy tales. To modern ears, these compositions will sound like modern fairy tales, with the same imagination and wonder that kept these beloved stories alive for centuries. Like fairy tales, Yelena’s works have a deeper meaning; her sophistication lies in her talent,” It’s hard to read about Yelena’s music without hearing it! Earthly, beautiful, heavenly music!

Zoznámili sme sa na Jazzahead – niekedy okolo roku 2017! Vlastné pesničky si začala skladať keď mala ešte len 4 roky. Jazz začala študovať keď mala 20 rokov a prvý jazzový album nahrala v roku 2008 s Peter Erskinom. Dokonca pôsobila v experimentálnej jazz-rockovej skupine. V exkluzívnom rozhovore z roku 2019 nám predostrela svoj hudobný vývoj a zážitky počas mladosti v domovine a priblížila nám svoj jedinečný náhľad do jej sveta hudobného výrazu a kompozície. Klaviristka ruského pôvodu Yelena Eckemoff emigrovala do USA, kde patrí medzi veľmi zaujímavé a popredné osobnosti. Vo svojej hudbe kombinuje svoje skúsenosti s klasickou hudbou a jazzom. Jej hudba je plná lyrizmu a emócií, pričom skladby často dokresľujú nejaký príbeh. Jej štýl by sa dal opísať aj ako jazzový impresionizmus. A teraz vám predstavím ten jubilejný dvadsiaty – dvojdiskový, s názvom Scenes from the Dark Ages, ktorý nahrala s talianskymi hudobníkmi a jedným vzácnym hosťom. Najnovší Yelenin album nie je interpretáciou štylistických prvkov starej hudby s nádychom moderného jazzu. Vo svojich skladbách Yelena skôr kombinuje štruktúry klasickej hudby a vlastné melódie s rozmanitými rytmickými a štylistickými inováciami jazzu, fusion a world music 21. storočia. Navyše, do každého okamihu vnáša vlastné nadšenie pre interpretáciu a predvádzanie tohto jedinečného materiálu. Yelena hovorí: „Snívala som o tom, že sa narodím v stredoveku” a pokračuje: „Tento projekt sa od mojich ostatných tak líši, pretože má prog-rockový nádych. Nechcela som len gitaru a basgitaru, ale rockovú gitaru a elektrickú basgitaru a naozaj silnú biciu súpravu. Na tejto nahrávke hrám nielen na klavíri, ale aj na stredoveké nástroje ako organ, klavichord, čembalo a celesta. Chcela som aj husle a flautu a myslím si, že táto trochu nekonvenčná inštrumentácia dodáva hudbe ďalší rozmer.“ Ak sa priatelia pozorne započúvate, tieto hudobné príbehy sú miestami omamujúce až hypnotické. “Tento projekt stelesňoval môj znovuzrodený detský sen o stredoveku – tak, ako som si ho predstavovala po všetkých tých nádherných ilustrovaných rozprávkach. Pre moderné uši budú tieto skladby znieť ako moderné rozprávky, s rovnakou predstavivosťou a úžasom, ktoré tieto milované príbehy udržiavali pri živote po stáročia. Rovnako ako rozprávky, aj Yelenine diela majú hlbší význam; jej sofistikovanosť spočíva v jej talente, vďaka ktorému sa zložité javí ako jednoduché a jednoduché ako krásne.” Ťažko o Yeleninej hudbe čítať, kto ju ešte nepočul! Pozemsky nádherná nebeská hudba!
