Who among us in childhood did not read books about noble knights and beautiful ladies: Arthurian cycle, Tristan and Isolde, “Ivanhoe” and “Quentin Durward” by Walter Scott, “The Black Arrow” by Stevenson… Elena Ekimova, a girl from an intelligentsia family in Moscow, was no exception, enchanted by the romance of the Middle Ages. But she also had another passion: music – she began to play the piano and compose at the age of four, fortunately her mother taught music. Then there was Gnesinka, then the Moscow Conservatory. But Elena was “seduced” from a purely academic path first by Pink Floyd – and she became interested in prog-rock, and then by Brubeck – having attended his Moscow concert in 1987, she also came to jazz. And all this time Ekimova did not stop composing her own music, which absorbed all her musical discoveries. In 1991, Elena Ekimova, her husband and three children immigrated to the United States. After overcoming the problems typical of any immigrant, already as Yelena Eckemoff, she settled in Greensboro, North Carolina and continued to do what she loved. Her childhood hobbies were not forgotten. Elena composed Medieval Symphony, inspired by vivid memories for her. But this project never came to fruition. However, in 2010, she released her first album, Cold Sun, recorded with the participation of the famous jazz drummer Peter Erskine and the Danish bassist Mads Winding. Since then, Elena has published a whole series of interesting works as a composer, including biblical ones: The Birth of Emmanuel, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Better Than Gold and Silver (here she performed not only as an instrumentalist, but also as a vocalist), I Am a Stranger in This World. Some of these projects were solo, while others involved such prominent artists as Chris Potter, Joe Locke, Darek Oles and others.
And then the possibilities of realizing a long-standing dream began to crystallize. Yelena reworked Medieval Symphony, added new materials, and decided to make this project with the participation of an ensemble. The new double album, now called Scenes From the Dark Ages, was recorded in June 2023, in the ancient Italian city of Mantua (a very suitable place for a medieval theme) with the participation of a group of Italian musicians (guitar, violin, flute, bass) and the Indian percussionist and drummer Trilok Gurtu, very famous for his participation in projects where the West meets the East. Yelena herself participated in the project not only as a composer, but also as a keyboard player, working with a whole group of instruments – from classical piano and ancient clavichord to modern synthesizers.
… About five years ago I read the book by the British historian Lewis Saltzman “English Life in the Middle Ages”. The author chose a unique path: having rejected the traditional sequence of ruling persons and the chronology of wars and battles, he concentrated on the everyday life of the English of different classes of that time. Yelena Eckemoff followed a similar path, only in relation to medieval Europe as a whole. Her musical pictures – tracks take us from a village tavern (Village Tavern) to a knight’s tournament (Tournament), from the battlefield (Battle) to the alchemist’s laboratory (Alchemist), introduce us to the life of peasants (From Peasants Life) and lords (From the Life of the Lords), we meet pilgrims (Pilgrims), knights (Adventures of a Knight), monks in a monastery library (Monks in Scriptorium, possibly a salute to Umberto Eco), admire the grandeur of ancient castles (Legends of the Castle) and cathedrals (Cathedral, possibly a salute to William Golding). Stylistically, Yelena’s music is an organic symbiosis of modern chamber music, prog rock and jazz improvisation. The excellent work of all the project participants makes the music of Scenes From the Dark Ages unusually convincing and… it is simply very interesting to listen to! The album, like all previous works by Eckemoff, will be released on her label L & H Production at the end of March 2025. I hope it will find its grateful audience.

Но была у нее и еще одна страсть: музыка – она начала играть на фортепьяно и сочинять с четырех лет, благо музыку преподавала ее мама. Потом была Гнесинка, потом Московская консерватория. Но с чисто академического пути Елену «совратили» сначала Pink Floyd – и она увлеклась прог-роком, а потом Брубек – побывав на его московском концерте 1987 года, она пришла еще и к джазу. И все это время Екимова не переставала сочинять собственную музыку, вбиравшую в себя все ее музыкальные открытия.
В 1991 году Елена Екимова с мужем и тремя детьми эмигрировала в США. После преодоления характерных для любого эмигранта проблем, уже как Yelena Eckemoff, она поселилась в Гринсборо, Северная Каролина и продолжила заниматься любимым делом. Увлечения детства были не забыты. Елена сочинила Medieval Symphony («Средневековую симфонию»), навеянную живыми для нее воспоминаниями. Но до реализации этого проекта дело не дошло. Автор выбрал своеобразный путь: отказавшись от традиционной последовательности правящих особ и хронологии войн и битв, он сконцентрировался на повседневной жизни англичан разных сословий того времени. Схожим путем пошла и Елена Якимова, только применительно к средневековой Европе в целом.
