Creating conceptual works is a favorite task of pianist Yelena Eckemoff. This was the case with last year’s CD “Lonely Man and the Fish” and it is also the case with “Romance of the Moon”. This time she was inspired by poems by the Spanish writer Garcia Lorca. This gives the new album a particularly lyrical and romantic flavor. Alongside Eckemoff, the Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu plays the leading role. He is only replaced by Italian guitarist Riccardo Bertuzzi on four tracks. The beautiful, clear sound of all the instruments (piano, trumpet, flugelhorn, guitar, bass, drums) is striking. Influences from European classical music also come through. The booklet contains the English translations of the poems used, so that their content can be compared with the musical realization. Taken on its own, each piece has potential; however, more variety in the recordings (e.g. tempo variations) would be an option to increase the overall listening pleasure. Aloi

Konzeptionelle Werke zu erstellen, das ist eine beliebte Aufgabe der Pianistin Yelena Eckemoff. So war es bei der im Vorjahr erschienenen CD „Lonely Man and the Fish” und so ist es auch bei „Romance of the Moon”. Diesmal ließ sie sich durch Gedichte des spanischen Schriftstellers Garcia Lorca inspirieren. So erhält das neue Album einen besonders lyrisch-romantischen Einschlag. Die Hauptrolle dabei spielt neben Eckemoff der sardische Trompeter Paolo Fresu. Nur bei vier Titeln wird er durch den italienischen Gitarristen Riccardo Bertuzzi ersetzt. Auffällig ist der schöne, klare Klang sämtlicher Instrumente (Klavier, Trompete, Flügelhorn, Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug). Auch Einflüsse der europäischen klassischen Musik dringen durch. Im Booklet finden sich die englischen Übersetzungen der verwendeten Gedichte, womit deren Inhalte mit der musikalischen Umsetzung verglichen werden können. Jedes Stück für sich allein herausgenommen hat Potential; um den Hörgenuss noch zu steigern, wäre insgesamt aber noch mehr Abwechslung in den Einspielungen (z. B. Tempovariationen) eine Option. aloi
