Following “Romance Of The Moon” (2024) and “Scenes From The Dark Ages” (2025), it’s time for my third review of a YELENA ECKEMOFF release on er-em online: With “Rosendals Garden,” the Moscow-born, U.S.-based pianist and composer once again presents a double album—beautifully packaged in a digipak with a 28-page booklet. The main theme of this album is a tribute to Sweden’s natural beauty and history, and it features eleven tracks that combine creative jazz improvisations with personal narratives. The music reflects the composer’s connection to Swedish nature and encompasses various moods and emotional impressions. Recorded in just two days, the pieces are conceived as standalone stories and include, among other things, a tribute to the famous Swedish group ABBA (“ABBA Museum”), echoes of the past of a former military base (“Ruins of Älvsborg”), and a reflection on the floral oasis Rosendals Garden in Djurgården, Stockholm. The diverse themes are masterfully realized by YELENA and her fellow musicians Svante Henryson (cello, electric and double bass) and Morgan Ågren (drums and percussion): From peaceful elegance to mist-shrouded gloom, each piece reflects the most varied facets of the Swedish landscape and culture. Once again, YELENA knows how to enchant—and once again, her release comes highly recommended to every fan of modern jazz. Outstanding! (L & H Production)

Nach „Romance Of The Moon“ (2024) und „Scenes From The Dark Ages“ (2025) ist meine dritte Besprechung eines YELENA ECKEMOFF-Releases auf er-em online fällig: Mit „Rosendals Garden“ legt die in Moskau geborene und in den USA lebende Pianistin und Komponistin erneut ein Doppelalbum vor – im Digipak plus 28 seitigem Booklet wunderschön aufgemacht. Das Hauptthema dieses Albums ist eine Hommage an die natürliche Schönheit und Geschichte Schwedens und enthält elf Tracks, die kreative Jazzimprovisationen mit persönlichen Erzählungen kombinieren. Die Musik spiegelt die Verbindung der Komponistin zur schwedischen Natur wider und umfasst verschiedene Stimmungen und emotionale Eindrücke. Die an nur zwei Tagen aufgenommenen Stücke sind als eigenständige Geschichten konzipiert und beinhalten unter anderem eine Hommage an die bekannte schwedische Gruppe ABBA („ABBA Museum“), Anklänge an die Vergangenheit eines ehemaligen militärischen Stützpunkts („Ruins of Älvsborg“) und eine Reflexion über die Blumen-Oase Rosendals Garden in Djurgården, Stockholm. Die unterschiedlichen Themen werden von YELENA und ihren Mitmusikern Svante Henryson (cello, electric and double bass) und Morgan Ågren (drums and percussion) kongenial umgesetzt: Von friedlicher Eleganz bis hin zu nebelverhangener Düsternis spiegelt jedes Stück unterschiedlichste Facetten der schwedischen Landschaft und Kultur wider. Title: Jazzy Prog Rock of the Highest Class

Attentive er-em online readers should not be unfamiliar with the name YELENA ECKEMOFF – her last album “Romance Of The Moon” was enthusiastically reviewed there in May last year. With “Scenes From The Dark Ages”, the keyboardist, composer and composer, who was born in Moscow in 1962 and has been living in the U.S.A. since 1991, presents a double album whose origins go back a long way. At a young age, YELENA discovered prog rock, the idea of a project entitled “Medieval Symphony” was born, the first tracks were created… and the project was put on hold for the time being. Decades later, these tracks form the basis of the present release, in which prog rock and fusion are performed acoustically, electrically and electronically by an excellent ensemble. The album was recorded together with Riccardo Bertuzzi (g), Carlo Nicita (flute), Eloisa Manera (violin), Riccardo Oliva (b) and the drumming legend Trilok Gurtu (dr, perc) in Mantua/Italy. The result is jazzy prog-rock in a class of its own, in which medieval instruments such as clavichord, celesta and harpsichord are used on an equal footing with organ, synths, electric piano and rock instruments. Aufmerksamen er-em online-Lesern dürfte der Name YELENA ECKEMOFF nicht unbekannt sein – ihr letztes Album „Romance Of The Moon“ wurde im Mai letzten Jahres enthusiastisch dort rezensiert. Mit „Scenes From The Dark Ages“ legt die 1962 in Moskau geborene und seit 1991 in den U.S.A. lebende Keyboarderin, Komponistin und Komponistin gleich ein Doppelalbum vor, dessen Ursprünge weit zurück liegen. In jungen Jahren entdeckte YELENA Prog Rock, es entstand die Idee eines „Medieval Symphony“ betitelten Projekts, erste Tracks entstanden… und das Projekt wurde vorerst auf Eis gelegt. Jahrzehnte später bilden diese Tracks die Basis des nun vorliegenden Releases, bei dem Prog Rock und Fusion akustisch, elektrisch und elektronisch von einem hervorragenden Ensemble performt wird. Das Album wurde gemeinsam mit Riccardo Bertuzzi (g), Carlo Nicita (flute), Eloisa Manera (violin), Riccardo Oliva (b) und der Schlagzeug-Legende Trilok Gurtu (dr, perc) in Mantua/Italien aufgenommen, das Ergebnis ist jazziger Prog-Rock der Extraklasse, bei der mittelalterliche Instrumente wie Clavichord, Celesta und Cembalo gleichberechtigt neben Orgel, Synths, elektrischem Piano und Rock-Instrumentarium eingesetzt werden. Title: Beautiful impressionistic modern jazz with slight fusion echoes

Born in Moscow in 1962 and living in the U.S.A. since 1991, the pianist, composer and composer YELENA ECKEMOFF has been known for using stories, poems and biblical texts as sources of inspiration for her compositions since her first solo release. In her latest work, “Romance Of The Moon”, she set 13 poems by the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) to music – purely instrumental. Together with the Italian musicians Paolo Fresu (trumpet, flugelhorn), Riccardo Bertuzzi (electric guitar), Luce Bulgarelli (double bass) and Stefano Bagnoli (drums), an album was created that more than deserves the name “Gesamtkunstwerk”. The 28-page booklet of the CD contains English translations of every poem used for this album, written by ECKEMOFF, and the paintings on the cover were also painted by her. For a better understanding, she even went so far as to translate all the texts into Italian for the accompanying musicians. The result is beautiful impressionistic modern jazz with slight fusion echoes, in which each individual musician has been given all the possibilities of development and both acoustic and electric instruments harmonize perfectly with each other. Music that stimulates the listener’s imagination even before the poem has even been read. Titel: Wunderschöner impressionistischer Modern Jazz mit leichten Fusion-Anklängen

Die 1962 in Moskau geborene und seit 1991 in den U.S.A. lebende Pianistin, Komponistin und Komponistin YELENA ECKEMOFF ist seit ihrer ersten Solo-Veröffentlichung dafür bekannt, Erzählungen, Gedichte und auch biblische Texte als Inspirationsquellen ihrer Kompositionen zu verwenden. In ihrem neuesten Werk, „Romance Of The Moon“ vertonte sie 13 Gedichte des spanischen Lyrikers und Dramatikers Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) – rein instrumental. Gemeinsam mit den italienischen Musikern Paolo Fresu (trumpet, flügelhorn), Riccardo Bertuzzi (electric guitar), Luce Bulgarelli (double bass) und Stefano Bagnoli (drums) entstand ein Album, das die Bezeichnung „Gesamtkunstwerk“ mehr als verdient. Das 28seitige Booklet der CD enthält von ECKEMOFF verfaßte englische Übersetzungen jedes für dieses Album verwendeten Gedichts, auch die Gemälde des Covers wurden von ihr gemalt. Zum besseren Verständnis ging sie sogar so weit, alle Texte für die Begleitmusiker ins Italienische zu übersetzen. Das Ergebnis ist wunderschöner impressionistischer Modern Jazz mit leichten Fusion-Anklängen, bei dem jedem einzelnen Musiker alle Möglichkeiten der Entfaltung gelassen wurden und sowohl akustische als auch elektrische Instrumente perfekt miteinander harmonieren. Musik, die die Phantasie des Hörers anregt, noch ehe das jeweilige Gedicht überhaupt gelesen wurde. Ein in jeder Hinsicht großartiges Release, bei dem neben dem Sound auch großer Wert auf das Artwork gelegt wurde, siehe das bereits erwähnte Booklet und das Packaging im Digipak-Format. Wunderbar!
