Yelena Eckemoff, Russian pianist residing in USA had already released album dedicated to Biblical Psalms in 2018 – “Better than Gold and Silver” (which she recorded with Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Ben Monder on electric guitar, Christian Howes on violin, Drew Gress on bass and Joey Baron on drums). New album includes three additional tracks from same recording session. She also added new tracks in December 2020, during the pandemic, when she recalled the same musicians and guitarist Adam Rogers and drummer Nasheet Waits to recording session once again dedicated to Psalms, this time without singers – although these tracks were originally composed for singers. In addition to the piano, she is on Fender Rhodes. As always she is superb both in writing and improvisation and in the way she organizes the band, that is effortlessly able to move from a compositions inspired by sacred music to the blues. These extraordinary musicians appear to be animated by the desire to play during a rather dark period of time characterized by the lack of opportunities to perform. As always with her, a beautiful and outstanding record emerges. Well worthy of listening to, as well as other albums by this artist.

Nel dicembre del 2020, durante la pandemia, ha ancora richiamato gli stessi musicisti ed il chitarrista Adam Rogers e Nasheet Waits alla batteria per una seduta di registrazione dedicata ancora una volta ai salmi, questa volta senza cantanti, anche se nelle sue composizioni erano previsti. Oltre che al pianoforte lei è al Fender Rhodes e come sempre ispirata sia nella scrittura che nelle improvvisazioni e nel modo in cui organizza la band, capace di passare da una lettura ispirata alla musica sacra al blues. Ne spunta, come sempre da parte sua, un bel disco, ispirato, in cui gli straordinari musicisti appaiono animati da voglia di suonare durante un periodo piuttosto buio caratterizzato dalla mancanza di occasioni per esibirsi. Da ascoltare, così come le altre cose realizzate da questa artista.

Yelena Eckemoff, now a well-known Russian pianist but resident in the USA, returned to Finland to record this new and inspired work of hers, again with the musicians who had accompanied her in 2017. Alongside Panu Savolainen on vibraphone, Antti Lötjönen on double bass and Olavi Louhivuori on drums have now been joined by Jukka Perko on soprano and tenor sax and Jarmo Saari on guitars, theremin and glass harp. She is, as always, a composer full of ideas, which her sideman immediately assimilated and which they express without ever losing tension throughout the entire album. In addition to being a musician, she is also a painter and poet and everything is included in the making of the album. Inside the album there are eighteen poems and paintings, made by her, which revolve around the story of a plant that grows and communicates with the surrounding environment, without conflicts, even if there are different opinions. The music is obviously full of colors, of fascinating melodies, of more complex moments and others in which the music stretches towards an engaging lyricism. Sometimes it seems, thanks to Jarmo Saari’s unusual tools, to be in a psychedelic environment. It is a long album, but as soon as you get involved in the sounds and tales of the musicians everything flows quickly, of an uncanny beauty. Nice record, as well as the other things of Yelena, a visionary pianist, for what she manages to convey to us.

Yelena Eckemoff, ormai nota pianista russa ma residente in USA, è ritornata in Finlandia per l’incisione di questo suo nuovo ed ispirato lavoro, di nuovo con i musicisti che l’avevano accompagnata nel 2017. Accanto a Panu Savolainen al vibrafono, Antti Lötjönen al contrabbasso e Olavi Louhivuori alla batteria si sono aggiunti ora Jukka Perko al sax soprano e tenore e Jarmo Saari alle chitarre, theremin e glass harp. Lei è come sempre una compositrice ricca di idee, che i suoi sideman hanno subito assimilato e che esprimono senza mai cadute di tensione durante l’intero album. Oltre ad essere una musicista, lei è anche pittrice e poetessa ed il tutto viene inserito nella realizzazione dell’album. All’interno dell’album ci sono diciotto poesie e dei quadri, da lei realizzati, che girano intorno alla storia di una pianta che cresce e comunica con l’ambiente circostante, senza conflitti, anche se ci sono opinioni differenti. La musica ovviamente è ricca di colori, di melodie affascinanti, di momenti più complessi ed altri in cui la musica si distende verso un lirismo coinvolgente. A volte sembra, grazie agli inusuali strumenti di Jarmo Saari di essere in un ambiente psichedelico. È un lungo album, ma appena ci si lascia coinvolgere nei suoni e nei racconti dei musicisti tutto scorre velocemente, di una bellezza sconcertante. Bel disco, così come le altre cose di Yelena, una pianista visionaria, per quello che riesce a trasmetterci.

The US-based Russian pianist Yelena Eckemoff has an inexhaustible supply of ideas that she develops with her high-quality jazz sidemen, who constantly make the most out of them. This time she went to the studio with a trio of Norwegian musicians, bassist Arild Andersen and drummers Jon Christensen and Thomas Strønen, all well-known musicians for their prolific music work, the first two been the rhythm sections of Keith Jarrett’s famous quartet’s and Jan Garbarek’s famous quartet’s in the 1970s. This record goes beyond music, because Yelena is a multifaceted artist, who paints pictures and writes poems, in this case describing night animals. Musical compositions attempt to give an idea of the of each specie’s personality; they are portraits of its characters. Here is a very interesting thing: the rhythm always changes, because of the two drummers, who are very refined and elegant in how they integrate with each other, creating one rhythmically whole record. She gives her sidemen a wide variety of solo to space, while still maintaining a full control of each track. With her experience in both classical music and jazz, as a pianist and as a composer, she creates a very original atmosphere, in some tracks – angular and conspicuous, as in “Hedgehog”, in some others tracks – more liquid, in every case enriching the musical panorama for her listeners. This is very nice record, and as soon as you connect to Yelena’s music, these two CDs quickly flow from first track to the last.

La pianista russa,ma ora residente in USA, Yelena Eckemoff è una fonte inesaurubile di idee che vengono di volta in volta realizzate con sideman di grande qualità, ispirati dalla sua musica a dare costantemente il massimo. Questa volta in studio è andata insieme ad un trio di musicisti norvegesi, il contrabbassista Arild Andersen ed i batteristi Jon Christensen e Thomas Strønen, tutti musicisti noti per la loro prolifica attività, i primi due sono stati negli anni ’70 la ritmica del famoso quartetto di Keith Jarrett e Jan Garbarek. Il disco è qualcosa che va al di là della musica, perché Yelena è un’artista globale, che dipinge e scrive poesie, nella fattispecie dedicate agli animali notturni. Le sue composizioni cercano di dare l’idea del carattere delle specie coinvolte, sono dei ritratti del carattere. Ovunque cambia il ritmo, qui un aspetto molto interessante a causa dei due batteristi, molto raffinati ed eleganti per come si integrano, e l’armonia. Lei ovviamente riesce a dare una bella varietà ai suoi assoli e spazio ai suoi sideman, mantendendo comunque una bella compattezza delle esecuzioni. Con la sua esperienza sia nel campo della musica classica che nel jazz, come pianista e come compositrice, crea delle atmosfere molto originali, alcune angolari e spigolose, come su Hedgehog, altre più liquide, in ogni caso arricchendo il panorama musicale degli ascoltatori. Bel disco, una volta che si entra in sintonia con il mondo musicale di Yelena i due CD scorrono via all’ascolto velocemente.

Each recording of the Russian pianist (now residing in the USA) Yelena Eckemoff transmits emotions to the listener and also to the musicians with whom she plays, as can be seen on this new record in duo with the French drummer Manu Katché.

She is a complete artist, so that in addition to the music, you will find her paintings and texts in the booklet that describe the sensations that have given her the colors. From white that opens the disc to black that closes it, she tackles all these colors and nuances that influence the life of a human, accompanied by the masterly ways of a drummer who feels like a partner, rather than a collaborator, rich in ideas and rhythms, constantly expressing in his playing that special something that attracts attention.

The compositions are entirely by the pianist, ranging between different styles, with an uncontrollable fantasy and without boundaries. Positive thoughts await the listener in relaxing colors like Green, followed by a song that presents more melancholic color, Violet. The dialogue between the two musicians works in a special, exciting way, completely in tune with the ideas of the performed music.

Manu Katché knows how to enrich music with colors, and also in tracks like White or Indigo, his presence involves engaging rhythms that give a special atmosphere to the performance. As with all the works of this pianist, you keep listening to the record until the end being fascinated by her way of making music: between improvisation and composition, classical and jazz, without resembling a crossover project at all!

A great record, which has all the qualities to remain among the best releases of the current year.

Ogni incisione della pianista russa (ora residente in USA) Yelena Eckemoff trasmette delle emozioni all’ascoltatore ed anche ai musicisti con cui suona, come si può notare su questo nuovo disco in duo con il batterista francese Manu Katché.

Lei è un’artista completa così che oltre alla musica nel booklet si trovano suoi dipinti e testi che descrivono le sensazioni che le hanno dato i colori. dal bianco che apre il disco al nero che lo chiude lei affronta tutti quei colori e le sfumature che influenzano le biografie degli umani, accompagnata in modo magistrale da un batterista che si presenta come un partner, più che un accompagnatore, ricco di proposte e ritmi, ogni volta dando all’esecuzione quel qualcosa di speciale che attira l’attenzione.

La scittura delle composizioni è tutta della pianista, che spazia per diversi stili con una fantasia irrefrenabile, senza confini. Spuntano pensieri positivi all’ascolto di colori rilassanti come Green, seguito da un brano che ci presenta un colore più malinconico, Violet. Il dialogo fra i due musicisti funziona in modo speciale, appassionante, completamente in sintonia sulle idee nelle esecuzioni.

Manu Katché sa arricchire di colori la musica, ma in brani come White oppure Indigo presenza ritmi coinvolgenti che danno all’esecuzione un’atmosfera speciale. Come sempre quando si tratta di questa pianista si ascolta il disco fino alla fine restando affascinati dal suo modo di fare musica, fra improvvisazione e composizione, classica e jazz, senza assomigliare per niente ad un progetto crossover!

Un gran bel disco, che ha tutte le qualità per restare fra le cose migliori dell’anno in corso.

By now Russian pianist Yelena Eckemoff is on permanent ground in North Carolina and has dedicated herself to jazz music with a series of recordings that each time leave us surprised at all she can express. Also in this new recording, dedicated to the reinterpretation of ten biblical psalms, she excites us and makes us partakers of a creative world that seems inexhaustible. In the liner notes she tells a lot about her life, about how she arrived in the USA and how the reading of the bible in English inspired her. He wrote the first piece performed here, Psalm 131, then from there came other ideas, the compositions inspired by nine other psalms and the decision to present the music in two versions, the one with the singers Tomás Cruz, tenor, and Kim Mayo, mezzo soprano, and that only instrumental. The chosen musicians are always among the best on the music scene, this time only American, able to extract the maximum from his compositions, to put their personal voice at the service of the composer and pianist and to make the music unique. Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Ben Monder electric guitar, Christian Howes violin, Drew Gress on double bass and Joey Baron on drums are the sideman chosen, involved in a special project, which can be combined with other works of music inspired by religious tradition, the Sacred Concerts by Duke Ellington from 1968 and Tehillim by Steve Reich from 2000, dedicated to a minimalist interpretation of the psalms. There is room for improvisations, for moments of swing or Latin music, moments in which the musicians give a particular color to a music inspired by the liturgy, but that basically represents today’s jazz. Great record, solid and rich in musicality.

Ormai la pianista russa Yelena Eckemoff è in pianta stabile in North Carolina e si è dedicata alla musica jazz con una serie di incisioni che ogni volta ci lasciano sorpresi per tutto quello che riesce a esprimere. Anche in questa nuova incisione, dedicata alla rilettura di dieci salmi biblici, ci emoziona e ci ci rende partecipi di un mondo creativo che sembra inesauribile. Nelle liner notes ci racconta molto della sua vita, di come è arrivata in USA e di come la lettura della bibbia in inglese la abbia ispirata. Ha scritto il primo brano qui eseguito, Psalm 131 poi da lì sono arrivate altre idee, le composizioni ispirate ad altri nove salmi e decisione di presentare la musica in due versioni, quella con i cantanti Tomás Cruz tenore e Kim Mayo mezzo soprano, e quella soltanto strumentale. I musicisti scelti sono come sempre fra i migliori presenti sulla scena musicale, questa volta soltanto americana, in grado di estrarre il massimo dalle sue composizioni, di mettere la loro voce personale al servizio della compositrice e pianista e di rendere la musica unica. Ralph Alessi alla tromba, Ben Monder chitarra elettrica, Christian Howes violino, Drew Gress al contrabbasso e Joey Baron alla batteria sono i sideman scelti, coinvolti in un progetto speciale, che si può accomunare ad altre opere di musica ispirata dalla tradizione religiosa, i Sacred Concerts di Duke Ellington del 1968 e Tehillim di Steve Reich del 2000, dedicato ad una interpretazione minimalista dei salmi. Every recording of the Russian pianist (but now residing in the USA) Yelena Eckemoff has something special, because of her music, obviously, but also due to all the emotions that she manages to convey involving the listener and the other musicians involved in the project. This time there are the faithful Arild Andersen on double bass and Peter Erskine on drums, with whom she has already recorded in trio. To complete the quartet there is another star of today’s jazz, multi- instrumentalist Paul McCandless on oboe, English horn, soprano sax and bass clarinet. The cover, which obviously represents a typical landscape with the dunes, was painted by the pianist; inside the booklet there are stories inspired by evoked landscapes, a reading that completes the message of a multifaceted artist, at ease not only as a pianist and composer, but also with other means of expression. From the beginning, with Bedouins, you listen to a music in which sidemen give their best, inspired by the ideas of the leader. We know McCandless for his long collaboration with the Oregon, but with this trio he finds an ideal collocation, expressing on his instruments absolutely original ideas, in this perfectly indulged by the others. Condor it is a duo piece, with a pensive atmosphere, almost translating into music the story of the protagonist, the ruler of the skies of the Andes and capable of scrutinizing what happens on the arid land. It is a piece with an enthralling poetics in which the rhythm acts to give the idea of ​​these so special atmospheres. On Oasis returns the complete quartet, with McCandless on oboe, the pianist solo and Andersen’s bass so smooth and fast that it almost sounds like a guitar. On the restless Dust Storm McCandless is on bass clarinet; here it is also worth mention the work of Peter Erskine in one of the most interesting pieces of the album. Eckemoff continues to amaze and thrill us with her music, between jazz and classical, improvisation and composition, made together with musicians who capture the essence of her writing.

Questa volta ci sono i fidi Arild Andersen al contrabbasso e Peter Erskine alla batteria, con cui ha già inciso in trio, a completare il quartetto un’altra stella del jazz di oggi, il multistrumentista Paul McCandless all’oboe, al corno inglese, al sax soprano ed al clarinetto basso. La copertina, che ovviamente rappresenta un tipico paesaggio con le dune, è stata dipinta dalla pianista, all’interno del booklet si trovano delle storie ispirate ai paesaggi evocati, una lettura che completa il messaggio di un’artista totale, a suo agio non soltanto come pianista e compositrice, ma anche con altre possibilità di espressione. Fin dall’inizio, con Bedouins si ascolta una musica in cui i sidemam danno il meglio di sé stessi, ispirati dalle idee della leader. Conosciamo McCandless per la lunga collaborazione con gli Oregon, con questo trio trova comunque una collocazione ideale, esprimendo ai suoi strumenti idee assolutamente originali, in questo perfettamente assecondato dagli altri. Condor è un brano in trio, dall’atmosfera pensosa, quasi a tradurre in musica il racconto del protagonista, dominatore dei cieli delle Ande e capace da lassù di scrutare cosa succede sull’arida terra. È un brano dalla poetica coinvolgente in cui la ritmica agisce per dare l’idea di queste atmosfere cosí speciali. Su Oasis ritorna il quartetto al completo, con McCandless all’oboe, l’assolo della pianista ed il contrabbasso di Andersen così fluido e veloce che sembra quasi una chitarra. Sull’inquieto Dust Storm McCandless è al clarinetto basso, qui è anche da rilevare il lavoro di Peter Erskine in uno dei brani più interessanti dell’album. La Eckemoff continua a stupirci ed a emozionarci con la sua musica, fra jazz e classica, improvvisazione e composizione, realizzata insieme a musicisti che colgono l’essenza della sua scrittura.

In this quartet Yelena Eckemoff is along with some well-known Norwegian musicians who have recorded for the ECM catalog. The studio, the Rainbow Studio in Oslo, and the recording technician, Jan Erik Kongshaug, are well-known to enthusiasts who follow the brochures of the Munich Chamber of Commerce. The double bassist Arild Andersen has already recorded in trio with her, drummer Jon Christensen is another veteran of the Scandinavian musical scene, tenor and soprano saxophonist Tore Brunborg is also among the most well-known musicians there.

It is an almost visual album, from the cover, of course, with Eckemoff’s painting picturing the sea, but also for the music, so evocative. They are all her compositions (with two exceptions,) as well as poems within the booklet. Prism and Man are Arild Andersen’s tunes, they are in the middle of the album and integrate with the others, confirming the group’s consistency and that their ideas all go in the same direction. Here you are treated with music of more abstract character, but the sound of the group does not flake and remains faithful to the aesthetic choice. The collective works pretty well, as if they had been together forever, and this is another of the talents of this pianist, that is to write and drive the band with authority.

Among the songs the Abyss is a leader of a beauty of the northern world, between Andersen’s double bass lines and the controlled saxophone sound, but with engaging development, showing a tension under the surface that keeps the listener’s attention. The Russian pianist has always something new to say, and from one album to the next her musical ideas are constantly evolving, which also benefits the contemporary jazz scene.

Yelena Eckemoff è in questo quartetto insieme a dei musicisti norvegesi piuttosto conosciuti e che hanno registrato per il catalogo ECM. Anche lo studio, il Rainbow Studio di Oslo, ed il tecnico della registrazione, Jan Erik Kongshaug, sono conosciuti agli appassionati che seguono le pubblicazioni della casa discogrfica di Monaco di Baviera. Il contrabbassista Arild Andersenha già inciso in trio insieme a lei, il batterista Jon Christensen è un altro veterano della scena musicale scandinava, al sax tenore e soprano Tore Brunborg, anche lui fra i musicisti più conosciuti da quelle parti.

È un album quasi visivo, dalla copertina, certo, con i dipinti della Eckemoff che rappresentano il mare, ma anche per la musica, così evocativa. Sono tutte composizioni sue (con due eccezioni), così come le poesie all’interno del booklet. Prism e Man sono invece di Arild Andersen, sono al centro dell’album e si integrano con le altre, a confermare la compattezza del gruppo e le idee che vanno tutte nella stessa direzione. Qui si va su una musica dai caratteri più astratti, ma il suono del gruppo non si sfalda e resta fedele all’estetica scelta. Il collettivo funziona piuttosto bene, come se fossero stati da sempre insieme, e questa è un’altra delle doti di questa pianista, e cioè di scrivere e guidare con autorevolezza la band.

Fra i brani della leader Abyss è di una bellezza dai tratti nordici, fra le linee del contrabbasso di Andersen e il suono controllato del sassofono, ma coinvolgente per come procede, con una tensione sotto la superfice che mantiene l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore. La pianista russa ha sempre qualcosa di nuovo da dire e da un album all’altro le sua idee sulla musica sono in continua evoluzione, ne beneficia anche la scena jazz contemporanea.

This time Yelena Eckemoff collaborates with the rhythm section with which even the Milan pianist Massimo Colombo has already recorded: Darek Oleszkiewicz at the double bass and Peter Erskine on drums. The two sideman are leading her to wider jazz territories, where they find a point of encounter and fruitful dialogue with Eckemoff’s compositions. They are musicians with extensive experience behind both jazz and fusion and at ease working with classical pianists. 

There are some themes that swing gently, like Good Morning, devoted to her son Anthony, a delicate, feminine jazz sounding deeply inspired and communicative. It is not lacking space for a double bass solo accompanied by the other two. For Harry is dedicated to her husband Harry; she starts alone and slowly develops the groove with ballad tones, very intense, evocative, rich in facets, like every relationship involving important feelings. In the performance also comes an explicit swing, a moment you would expect from a colleague like Brad Mehldau. The most romantic aspect is Where is Maxim, but here you can put together the classic and jazz part with seductive subtlety, tiptoe. Tears Will Come leaves ample room for the melancholy intervention of the double bass. Insomnia still swings, and how could it be otherwise, since such music often finds space in clubs that are crowded, especially at night? The ballad Mama is wonderful, emotionally engaging. The last two tracks are dedicated respectively to Erskine and Oleszkiewicz and close a big album where the Russian pianist lets himself go to a close encounter with jazz forms, intense and full of emotions.

Yelena Eckemoff è insieme ad una ritmica con cui anche il pianista milanese Massimo Colombo ha già inciso, Darek Oleszkiewicz al contrabbasso e Peter Erskine alla batteria. I due sideman la portano verso territori più jazzistici e trovano un punto di incontro e dialogo proficuo con le composizioni della Eckemoff. Sono entrambi musicisti con una vasta esperienza alle spalle, sia nel jazz che nella fusion e si trovano a loro agio con l’esperienza di musicista classica della pianista.

Ci sono temi che swingano delicatamente, Good Morning, dedicato al figlio Anthony, un jazz dai toni delicati, femminili, verrebbe quasi da dire, che suonano profondamente ispirati e comunicativi. Non manca lo spazio per un assolo del contrabbasso accompagnato dagli altri due. For Harry è dedicto al marito Harry, comincia in solo e lentamente arriva la ritmica con dei toni da ballad molto intensa, suggestiva, ricca di sfaccettature, come ogni relazione in cui sono coinvolti sentimenti importanti. Nell’esecuzione arriva anche uno swing esplicito, un momento che ci si aspetterebbe da un collega come Brad Mehldau. Dall’aspetto più romantico è Where is Maxim, ma qui lei riesce a mettere insieme la parte classica e quella jazz con seducente sottigliezza, in punta di piedi. Tears Will Come lascia ampio spazio al malinconico intervento del contrabbasso. Su Insomnia ritorna ancora lo swing, e come potrebbe essere altrimenti, visto che questa musica trova spesso spazio nei club che sono affollati soprattutto la notte? Splendida la ballad Mama, emozionalmente coinvolgente. Gli ultimi due brani sono dedicati rispettivamente a Erskine e Oleszkiewicz e chiudono alla grande un album in cui la pianista russa si lascia andare ad un incontro ravvicinato con le forme del jazz, intenso e ricco di emozioni.

Russian pianist Yelena Eckemoff in this 2009 engagement is with the bass player Mads Vinding and drummer Peter Erskine. Noticeably, her music has evolved over the years thanks to her collaborations with musicians who not only performed studio music, but also made a hunch for new ideas. Here you can enjoy this representation of the “cold sun” in winter, just above the horizon and with the long shadows that give the landscape special light. The cover photo is an emblem of winter in Russia, but the song that opens the album is full of allusions: the chords of the theme intro, performed without accompaniment, gives an idea of ​​the cold, then her collaborators join in, and the song “warms up:” the rays of the sun and the heat of the double bass, the drums with their subtle sharpness on the cymbals, perhaps to represent the ice and its crunches under the steps. After Blizzard presents chaotic moments with arpeggios on the high range of the piano supported by the drums, which after the storm slowly reorganizes. Very expressive is drum solo by Erskine – a poet who knows how to sing even rhythms. Silence is full of notes, suspended moments, but also of tension, that apparent calm in the cold sun where no leaf moves. It’s a long song, over nine minutes, but it feels that under the surface something happens as the trio manages to express emotions that are directed to the listener. Very nice is the Winter finale, almost fourteen minutes, with Vinding’s warm bass taking the center of the stage in many places. A very enjoyable record, especially in the seasonal cold nights.

La pianista russa Yelena Eckemoff in questa incisione del 2009 è insieme al contrabbassista Mads Vinding ed a Peter Erskine alla batteria. Si può notare come la sua musica abbia subito un’evoluzione negli anni grazie alle collaborazioni con musicisti che  non soltanto hanno eseguito la musica in studio ma anche fatto da fermento per nuove idee. Qui si può godere di questa rappresentazione del “sole freddo” in inverno, appena poco sopra l’orizzonte e con le ombre lunghe che danno al paesaggio luci particolari. La foto di copertina è un emblema dell’inverno in Russia, ma anche l’omonimo brano che apre l’album è ricco di allusioni: gli accordi del tema, eseguiti senza accompagnamento, danno un’idea del freddo, poi arrivano i suoi collaboratori ed il brano si “riscalda”, i raggi del sole ed il calore del contrabbasso, la batteria con i suoi sottili acuti sui piatti, forse a rappresentare il ghiaccio ed i suoi scriccolii sotto i passi. After Blizzard presenta momenti di caos con gli arpeggi sull’estremità destra del pianoforte sostenuti dalla batteria che dopo la tempesta lentamente si riorganizzano. Molto espressivo l’assolo di Erskine alla batteria, un poeta che sa fare cantare anche i ritmi. Silence è ricco di note, di momenti sospesi, ma anche di tensione, quella calma apparente sotto il sole freddo in cui non si muove una foglia. È un lungo brano, oltre i nove minuti, ma si avverte che sotto la superfice qualcosa succede mentre il trio riesce a esprimere delle emozioni controllate che arrivano diritte all’ascoltatore. Molto bello il finale Winter, quasi quattordici minuti, con il caldo contrabbasso di Vinding al centro dell’attenzione per ampi momenti dell’esecuzione. Un disco godibilissimo, specie nelle notti della stagione fredda.

Following the double album recorded with Finnish musicians, this new release from pianist Yelena Eckemoff comes alive with American musicians. This special band was put together in the studio, because these popular musicians are often around with other bands, but it plays extraordinarily well together, catalyzed by the original compositions of the leader. There are Chris Potter at the tenor and soprano sax, flute and bass clarinet; Adam Rogers on the electric guitar; the rhythm is complemented by the double bassist Drew Gress and drummer Gerald Cleaver, recently heard in Tomasz Stanko’s quartet and Ivo Perelman’s groups. 

Eckemoff’s compositions are something special in contemporary jazz, distinct from the rest and sounding good with both European and American musicians. Her music has matured over the years, her writing from one disc to the other has acquired something profoundly original that brings the sideman, in our case rather navigated musicians, to give their best in emotional, not just technical terms. Take for example, Rogers guitar solo on Acorn Figurines: so delicate, full of nuances, followed by the double bass played with his bow so melancholic, and then in the trio with the pianist before Rogers arrives to close the piece. 

Everywhere on the disc music escapes from the traditional theme-solos-theme structure; here it works in a different way – from the point of view of the compositional structure, and in addition to the solos it adds to that vein of emotions that leaves its imprint on each song. Listen to a great solo that Chris Potter delivers on the soprano sax in Lament, as well as his bass clarinet solo on Vision of a Hunt – a track moving rather lively, and listen to the whole disc without stopping, because it is perfectly recorded. Eckemoff is one of the great personalities of contemporary jazz, as a composer and a leader who knows how to manage the bands with which she records.

Dopo il doppio album registrato con i musicisti finlandesi arriva a sorpresa questa nuova incisione della pianista Yelena Eckemoff insieme a musicisti americani. È un gruppo speciale, messo insieme in studio perché i loro protagonisti sono spesso in giro con altre band, ma che suona straordinariamente bene insieme, catalizzato dalle composizioni così originali della leader. Ci sono Chris Potter ai sax tenore e soprano, al flauto ed al clarinetto basso, Adam Rogers alla chitarra elettrica, la ritmica è completata dal contrabbassista Drew Gress e dal batterista Gerald Cleaver, ascoltato di recente nel quartetto di Tomasz Stanko e nei gruppi di Ivo Perelman. Eckemoff sono quel qualcosa di speciale nel jazz contemporaneo che si distingue da tutto il resto e che suonano bene sia eseguite con musicisti europei che con americani. La sua musica è maturata in questi anni, da un disco all’altro la scrittura ha acquisito qualcosa di profondamente originale che porta i sideman, nel nostro caso musicisti piuttosto navigati, a dare il massimo anche in termini emozionali, non soltanto tecnici. Prendiamo ad esempio l’assolo di chitarra di Rogers su Acorn Figurines, cosí delicato, pieno di sfumature, seguito dal contrabbasso suonato con l’archetto anche lui così malinconico, e poi dal trio con la pianista prima che arrivi ancora Rogers a chiudere l’esecuzione.

Si sfugge ovunque al classico tema-assoli-tema, qui funziona tutto in un altro modo dal punto di vista della struttura compositiva, inoltre si aggiunge negli assoli anche quella venatura di emozioni che dà una sua impronta in ogni brano. Si ascolta un grande assolo di Chris Potter al sax soprano su Lament, o ancora al clarinetto basso su Vision of a Hunt, un brano dall’andamento piuttosto movimentato e si ascolta tutto il disco senza momenti di sosta anche perché è registrato in modo perfetto. La Eckemoff si conferma tra le grandi personalità del jazz contemporaneo, come compositrice e per come sa gestire le band con cui registra.
