The Moscow-born pianist and composer Yelena Eckemoff has already released a number of records with the company L & H Production, including some trio records. Here she is in a quintet format.

The mother, Olga, a professional pianist, taught the four-year-old to play the piano and soon a very successful career including studies and corresponding master degrees developed. Yelena herself later became a piano teacher, played solo concerts, jazz and also experimental jazz rock. In 1991 she left the Soviet Union and has lived in the United States of America ever since.

She records with constantly changing line-ups, but seems to attach importance to being supported by top-class musicians, as here, on the new double album Lonely Man And His Fish again, including now as a special splash of color with Masaru Koga, who plays Japanese flutes, that could possibly set a direction. But my assumption is not confirmed, namely that there are also strong traces of Japanese music to be found. Because Koga ultimately plays very jazzy, albeit with a fairly free expression, and ultimately brings a special touch to the music, namely because the sound of the Japanese flutes still gives a little touch of Japan to the room.

Most recently, I introduced the pianist in 2022 with her album I Am A Stranger In This World , and the hard-working musician is now following up with two CDs in a double pack. And once again we have succeeded in presenting music that is full of life, full of creativity and combines elements of jazz, classical music and a little folklore at a high level into a fused jazz that contains the typical elements of long improvisational passages.

According to the press release, a little story should also be told in the form of a concept album, as it says:…an elegant, simple story that unfolds with the suggestive power of a parable. On the surface, it’s a story often told. A man meets a fish. The man loses the fish. Fish and man are reunited. But in the musical world of Eckemoff, who is also a poet and graphic artist and is responsible for the album’s striking cover art, seemingly simple stories reveal both the wonderful glow of everyday life and our spiritual connection with the natural world. If you want to know exactly what it’s about, you should take a look at the detailed liner notes, with the history of each individual song, as well as which roles the respective musicians embody in this story.

When reading the line-up, I came across the protagonist’s instrument “vintage Ampli-celeste”. This instrument, reminiscent of the sound of a marimba, can be heard well, for example, on “Man And His Fish”; it brings a very interesting tonal variation into the music. Together with the various Japanese flutes, a different world of sound has finally opened up again compared to earlier productions, yes, the artist seems to be constantly developing and bringing in new ideas, which ultimately also benefits the music, as she always has an effect fresh.

Cornetist Knuffke is the musician who, in my opinion, brings the strongest jazz influence to the music, while Yelena is more responsible for the classic characteristics, but not in order not to swing as well. Street and Harland as the rhythm section adapt to every color and play from jazz to fusion exactly to the point and form a dreamlike unit, always driving the respective solo musicians, always helping to shape it. And so music was created that seems “new” because the narrative character is quite understandable and – for those who don’t know the story yet – a new one is told through the music, which carries and also expresses quite a lot of different emotions, so these are two very entertaining albums of the highest quality.

Die aus Moskau stammende Pianistin und Komponistin Yelena Eckemoff hat bereits etliche Platten mit der Firma L & H Production veröffentlicht, darunter einige Trio-Platten. Hier ist sie im Quintettformat unterwegs.
Die Mutter, Olga, eine professionelle Pianistin lehrte der gerade einmal Vierjährigen das Pianospiel und schon bald entwickelte sich eine sehr erfolgreiche Laufbahn inklusive Studium und entsprechenden meisterlichen Abschlüssen. Selbst wurde Yelena später Klavierlehrerin, spielte Solokonzerte, Jazz und auch experimentellen Jazz Rock. 1991 verliess sie die Sowjetunion und lebt seitdem in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika.

Sie nimmt mit stets wechselnden Besetzungen auf, scheint aber Wert darauf zu legen, jeweils von hochkarätigen Musikern unterstützt zu werden, wie hier, auf dem neuen Doppel-Album Lonely Man And His Fish auch wieder, darunter nun als besonderen Farbtupfer mit Masaru Koga, der japanische Flöten spielt, das könnte möglicherweise auch eine Richtung vorgeben. Doch meine Vermutung bestätigt sich nicht, nämlich Jene, dass auch starke Spuren japanischer Musik zu finden sind. Denn Koga spielt letztlich sehr jazzmäßig, allerdings mit einer recht freien Ausprägung und bringt letztlich damit dennoch einen besonderen Anstrich in die Musik, und zwar dadurch, dass durch den Klang der japanischen Flöten dennoch ein kleiner Hauch von Japan durch den Raum schwebt.

Zuletzt stellte ich die Pianistin 2022 mit ihrem Album I Am A Stranger In This World vor, und die fleissige Musikerin legt nun gleich mit zwei CDs im Doppelpack nach. Und erneut ist es gelungen, Musik vorzustellen, die voller Leben steckt, voller Kreativität und auf hohem Niveau Elemente des Jazz, der Klassik und halt ein wenig Folklore zusammenfügt zu einem fusionierten Jazz, der die typischen Elemente von langen Improvisationspassagen enthält.

Laut Pressetext soll in Form eines Konzeptalbums auch eine kleine Geschichte erzählt werden, wie es heisst: …eine elegante, einfache Geschichte, die sich mit der suggestiven Kraft einer Parabel entfaltet. Oberflächlich betrachtet ist es eine oft erzählte Geschichte. Ein Mann trifft einen Fisch. Der Mann verliert den Fisch. Fisch und Mensch werden wiedervereint. Aber in der musikalischen Welt von Eckemoff, die auch Dichterin und Grafikerin ist und für das eindrucksvolle Cover des Albums verantwortlich zeichnet, offenbaren scheinbar einfache Geschichten sowohl das wunderbare Leuchten des Alltags als auch unsere spirituelle Verbundenheit mit der natürlichen Welt. Wer es genau wissen möchte, worum es geht, sollte hierzu einen Blick in die ausführlichen Liner Notes, mit der Geschichte zu jedem einzelnen Song, werfen, auch, welche Rollen die jeweiligen Musiker in dieser Geschichte verkörpern.

Beim Lesen des Line-ups stieß ich bei der Protagonistin auf die Angabe des Instruments “vintage Ampli-celeste”. Dieses, an den Klang einer Marimba erinnernde Instrument kann man gut hören zum Beispiel auf “Man And His Fish”, es bringt eine klanglich sehr interessante Variante in die Musik. Zusammen mit den verschiedenen japanischen Flöten hat sich insgesamt, im Vergleich zu früheren Produktionen, letztlich erneut eine andere Klangwelt eröffnet, ja, die Künstlerin scheint sich ständig zu entwickeln und neue Ideen einzubringen, was letztlich auch der Musik zu gute kommt, wirkt sie doch stets frisch.

Kornettist Knuffke ist der Musiker, der aus meiner Sicht den stärksten Jazz-Einfluss in die Musik einbringt, während Yelena eher für die klassischen Ausprägungen verantwortlich zeichnet, jedoch nicht, um nicht auch zu swingen. Street und Harland als Rhythm Section passen sich jeder Färbung an und spielen von Jazz bis zur Fusion genau auf den Punkt und bilden eine traumwandlerische Einheit, stets die jeweilig solierenden Musiker antreibend, dabei stets mitgestaltend. Und so ist erneut Musik entstanden, die “neu” wirkt, weil der erzählerische Charakter durchaus nachvollziehbar ist und – wer die Geschichte eben noch nicht kennt – eine neue erzählt bekommt, durch die Musik, die recht viele unterschiedliche Emotionen in sich trägt und auch ausdrückt, somit sind es zwei sehr unterhaltende Alben von höchster Qualität.

The pianist and composer Yelena Eckemoff, who comes from Moscow and lives in North Carolina, I had already presented several times with her outstanding releases, most recently with the record “Desert” released this year. I was always able to give her the best recommendations, since the music was always of the highest quality.

If I noticed on “Desert” that the lady was very busy, especially since “Desert” was the fourth release in a row since 2016, it now seems to go even faster. And again you have to adjust to a different line-up, though. The previous records shone with performances of such musicians as Mark Felman (violin), Verneri Pohjola (trumpet), Chris Potter (saxophone) or Paul McCandless on various wind instruments. Besides the soloists, it was also the drummers Billy Hart, Olavi Louhivuori, Gerald Cleaver and Peter Erskine who often had a say in the sound.

And so each release has its own charm and expression, but always bears the personal signature of the composer/pianist. For Better Than Gold And Silver she has come up with something very special. On the double CD there are the same titles on every single CD, ten each. The difference is that on the second CD there are only instrumentally recorded songs, but on the first CD there are all songs with vocals. This is contested by two experts, one is the mezzo-soprano Kim Mayo and the other is the tenor Tomás Cruz, one who has already sat down with other avant-garde artists and played together.

But why this division? Well, the project can be seen as a concept album. It should be the first of a series in which Yelena Eckemoff deals with biblical psalms. And so the vocal adaptations result from the texts of the respective psalms. The verses are supposed to come from the so-called King James Bible, which is an English translation of the Bible. From this, from Psalm 119, verse 72, comes also the title of the album. The artist wanted to use this Bible version because she thought it was deeper, richer and more poetic, and she felt inspired by the Psalms. Despite the vocal presence, there is still room for the individual soloists, but the different versions on CD 2 allow them to spread even more, and most of the pieces are longer. So we can look forward to excellent contributions not only from the protagonist, but also from Ralph Alessi on the trumpet, and very picturesque and sensitive also Ben Monder on the guitar and Christian Howes on the violin, underpinned by the always emotional and connecting smooth playing of the rhythm section.

And so this All-Star-Team succeeds in presenting an extremely expressive music on the highest level, which absolutely does justice to the Christian content of the psalms, because the mood is always solemn and very calm, often pausing like in prayers. And this has been accomplished absolutely with a beautiful and strongly harmonic lining, that often sounds truly like “Joy To The World”, music that spreads the Christian messages full of hope. Nevertheless, this is not church music in this sense, nothing sacred, but high-quality jazz using the psalms chosen by Eckemoff.

Die aus Moskau stammende und in North Carolina lebende Pianistin und Komponistin Yelena Eckemoff hatte ich bereits mehrere Male mit ihren hervorragenden Veröffentlichungen vorgestellt, zuletzt mit der in diesem Jahr erschienenen Platte “Desert”. Stets konnte ich die besten Empfehlungen dafür abgeben, war doch die Musik stets von höchster Qualität.

Stellte ich bei “Desert“ fest, dass die Dame sehr fleißig sei, zumal “Desert“ die vierte Veröffentlichung in Folge seit 2016 war, so scheint es nunmehr noch rasanter zu gehen. Und schon wieder muss man sich allerdings auf eine andere Besetzung einstellen. Die vorherigen Platten glänzten mit Darbietungen solcher Musiker wie Mark Felman (Violine), Verneri Pohjola (Trompete), Chris Potter (Saxofon) oder Paul McCandless an diversen Blasinstrumenten. Auch neben den Solisten waren es unter anderem die Schlagzeuger Billy Hart, Olavi Louhivuori, Gerald Cleaver und Peter Erskine, die den Sound oft mitbestimmten.

Und so hat auch jede Veröffentlichung ihren ganz eigenen Reiz und Ausdruck, trägt jedoch gleichwohl immer die persönliche Handschrift der Komponistin/Pianistin. Für Better Than Gold And Silver hat sie sich etwas ganz Besonderes ausgedacht. Auf der Doppel-CD finden sich auf jeder einzelnen CD die gleichen Titel, jeweils zehn an der Zahl. Der Unterschied besteht darin, dass sich auf der zweiten CD nur instrumental eingespielte Songs befinden, auf der ersten jedoch alle mit Gesang. Diesen bestreiten zwei Könner, einmal ist das die Mezzo-Sopranistin Kim Mayo und weiterhin der Tenorist Tomás Cruz, einer, der sich bereits mit anderen Künstlern der Avantgarde zusammensetzte und gemeinsam musizierte.

Warum jedoch diese Aufteilung? Nun, das Projekt kann man durchaus als Konzeptalbum betrachten. Es soll das erste einer Serie sein, in der sich Yelena Eckemoff mit biblischen Psalmen beschäftigt. Und so ergeben sich die Vokalbearbeitungen aus den Texten des jeweiligen Psalms. Die Verse sollen aus der sogenannten King James-Bibel stammen, diese ist eine englische Übersetzung der Bibel. Aus dieser, aus dem Psalm 119, Vers 72, stammt auch der Albumtitel. Die Künstlerin wollte diese Bibel-Version verwenden, weil sie sie für tiefgehender, reicher und poetischer hielt, und sie fühlte sich durch die Psalmen inspiriert. Trotz der vokalen Präsenz bleibt noch Raum für die einzelnen Solisten, jedoch durch die unterschiedlichen Versionen auf CD 2 vermögen sich diese noch mehr ausbreiten, zudem die meisten Stücke auch länger sind. So können wir uns auf exzellente Beiträge nicht nur von der Protagonistin, sondern auch von Ralph Alessi an der Trompete freuen, und sehr malerisch und einfühlsam gestalten ebenfalls Ben Monder an der Gitarre und Christian Howes mit der Violine, untermauert vom stets emotionalen und verbindenden geschmeidigen Spiel der Rhythmus-Gruppe.

Und so gelingt es diesem All-Star-Team auf höchstem Niveau eine äußerst ausdrucksstarke Musik zu präsentieren, die dem christlichen Inhalt der Psalme absolut gerecht wird, denn die Stimmung ist stets feierlich und sehr ruhig, oft wie in Gebeten innehaltend. Und dieses ist absolut mit einer schönen und stark harmonischen Auskleidung vollbracht worden, das klingt oft wahrhaft wie “Joy To The World“, Musik, die die christlichen Botschaften voller Hoffnung verbreitet. Dennoch ist dieses keine Kirchenmusik in diesem Sinne, nichts Heiliges, sondern hochwertiger Jazz unter der Anwendung der von Eckemoff ausgewählten Psalme.

Moscow-born pianist and composer Yelena Eckemoff is indeed very hard-working. After “Leaving Everything Behind” from 2016 and “Blooming Tall Phlox” and “In The Shadow Of A Cloud” from 2017, Desert is the fourth release in a row. Despite the relatively similar emotional expression of the music, this one is very different in the overall picture, due to the different musicians who bring in their respective notes. On this record it is the oboe player Paul McCandless, who is well-known by the group Oregon. And it is he who is able to portray the title Desert very well with his special style, not only on the oboe, but with his other instruments so that the listener can look up through the door that he opens to wide landscapes. Some pieces are also affected a bit by oriental influence, evident right at the beginning with “Bedouins.”

The fact that the four professionals can also be on the move, however, immediately shows “Mirages” with its free elements that open the rooms wide, without immediately completely push into free jazz. Finally, Andersen on the bass and Erskine on the drums, who subtly hold the music on the ground, Erskine reminds sometimes of his colleague Paul Motian. The compositions are again reminiscent of the classical trained background of the pianist, and so combine the different elements to a whole often beautiful sounding whole, “Desert’s Cry” is for example a reference tip.

And so the four musicians playfully escort us through the desert with the eleven pieces that make the album stand out as a concept album. Deeply penetrating into matter, closely intertwined by the high-class playing of the band, one experiences a drama that moves between the poles of silence and restlessness, endowed with melancholy and delicate romanticism. Once again, Yelena Eckemoff has succeeded in presenting a theme excellently and creating tension that links elements of classical music and folklore with jazz.

Die aus Moskau stammende Pianistin und Komponistin Yelena Eckemoff ist in der Tat sehr fleißig. Desert ist nach “Leaving Everything Behind“ aus 2016 und “Blooming Tall Phlox“ sowie “In The Shadow Of A Cloud” aus 2017 bereits die vierte Veröffentlichung in Folge. Trotz des relativ ähnlichen emotionalen Ausdrucks der Musik ist diese doch, aufgrund der verschiedenen Musiker, die ihre jeweilige Note stark einbringen, ganz unterschiedlich im Gesamtbild. Auf dieser Platte ist es der von der Gruppe Oregon bekannte Oboen-Spieler Paul McCandless, der sehr prägend wirkt. Und gerade er ist es, der den Titel Desert sehr gut darstellen kann mit seinem speziellem Stil, nicht nur auf der Oboe, so dass dem Hörer Tür und Tor zu weiten Landschaften geöffnet werden. Ein wenig wirkt das eine oder andere Stück auch mit orientalischem Einfluss behaftet, gleich zu Beginn bei “Bedouins“ allein wegen des Titels offensichtlich.

Dass die vier Profis aber auch anders unterwegs sein können, zeigt sogleich “Mirages“ mit seinen freien Elementen, die die Räume weit öffnen, ohne gleich komplett in den Free Jazz vorzustoßen. Letztlich sind es auch Andersen am Bass und Erskine am Schlagzeug, die ganz subtil die Musik am Boden halten, dabei erinnert Erskine mitunter an seinen Kollegen Paul Motian. Den Kompositionen vermag man abermals den klassisch geschulten Hintergrund der Pianistin anmerken, und so paaren sich die verschiedenen Elemente zu einem oft ganz wunderschön klingenden Ganzen, “Desert’s Cry“ ist zum Beispiel ein Anspieltipp.

Und so geleiten uns die vier Musiker spielerisch durch die Wüste mit den elf Stücken, die das Album insofern in den Stand eines Konzeptalbums hieven. Tief in die Materie eindringend, durch das niveauvolle Spiel der Band eng miteinander verflochten, erlebt man eine Dramatik, die sich zwischen den Polen Stille und Unruhe bewegt, mit Melancholie und zarter Romantik ausgestattet. Erneut ist es Yelena Eckemoff gelungen, ein Thema vortrefflich darzustellen und Spannung zu schaffen, die Elemente klassischer Musik und der Folklore mit dem Jazz verknüpft.

Moscow-born pianist and composer Yelena Eckemoff has already made several records on L & H Production label, including some in trio format. Here is a record in quartet format. Her mother, Olga, a professional pianist taught her to play piano when she was just four years old. Eckemoff has developed a very successful music carrier. She played solo classical concerts, jazz and experimental jazz rock. 1991 she left the Soviet Union and since then has lived in the United States of America. After the last outstanding album “Everblue” with the Tore Brunborg , Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen her new quartet has now been filled with the violinist Mark Feldman ,a very individual soloist. His experience in classical music helps this record to achieve a very interesting balance between classic musical elements and jazz. Feldman uses the whole spectrum of his violin in very impressive manner. At time he sounds like the he performs classical music, then he swells in folk “people’s soul” music, and occasionally loses himself in avant-garde sound, and then reminiscences like his colleague Stephane Grappelli, especially in the highly jazzy passages. Feldman’s presence on this record, perhaps even a little larger than Eckemoff’s, and his playing influences strongly the atmosphere and character of the music. The rhythm team operates perfectly, playful, sensitive and always as part of the whole. “Coffee and Thunder storm” is one of the most interesting pieces of the album and I recommend it highly. Music there is very light and airy; it is filled with subtle elements, and is almost poetic going through almost seven and a half minutes of continuous development and change. Here you can hear very clearly how Eckemoff balances classical music and jazz.

Durch seine Erfahrung auch im Bereich klassischer Musik ergibt sich auf dieser Platte eine sehr interessante Balance zwischen klassischen Elementen und Jazz. Und Feldman nutzt das ganze Spektrum seines Instruments auf beeindruckende Weise. Mal klingt er wie der Interpret ernster Musik, dann quillt die folkloristische „Volksseele“ aus den Boxen, gelegentlich verliert er sich in avantgardistisch klingende Gefilde, aber auch Reminiszenzen an den Kollegen Stephane Grappelli werden wach, gerade in den stark jazzigen Passagen. Somit ist Feldman sehr präsent, vielleicht gar ein wenig mehr als Eckemoff, und er bestimmt mit seinem Spiel die Atmosphäre und den Charakter der Musik sehr stark. Das Rhythmusgespann agiert tadellos, spielerisch, einfühlsam und stets als Teil des Ganzen. “Coffee & Thunderstorm“ ist eines der wohl interessantesten Stücke des Albums und ich empfehle es als Höreinstieg. Es wirkt sehr leicht und luftig, spielt mit subtilen Elementen, wirkt schon fast poetisch. Dazu gibt es innerhalb der fast siebeneinhalb Minuten ständige Entwicklung und Veränderung. Gerade hier spürt man auch die Balance zwischen klassischer Musik und Jazz sehr deutlich.
