What kind of a flower Blooming Tall Phlox is not quite clear botanically. It could be the high plants (Phlox Paniculata, also known as Flame flower or Autumn Lilac). But because Yelena Eckemoff grew up in Russia and Phlox Paniculata does not actually occur there in the wild, she possibly meant Phlox Sibirica. This is an international ornamental plant, and it is widespread in numerous garden around the world.

But botanical questions are inappropriate subtleties when it comes to music and what synesthesia is. Yelena Eckemoff‘s Phlox is rather about the pathos of her own memories then about a real plant. Ever is in the ornate relationship between nature and music (like Beethoven commented in his 6th Symphony) music is rather the expression of feelings, similar to painting. Yelena Eckemoff does not want suggestive analogies to the color of the flower. Her music is instead speaking about what odors remind us about.

But how do you translate sensory stimuli into other sensory stimuli, is there something audible in fragrances? As you know, there are people in whom sounds are able to create color impressions; in other words, they see music as yellow or pink sensation, but they always have difficulties to explain to other people the relationships between colors and music. Of analog short circuits between the sounds and flavors there is nothing so far known, and Yelena Eckemoff also does not attempt to come up with some sort of new theory. Her music is the way of using jazz to tell a story and thus create an emotional situation just behind the horizon, to suggest something, to point in a certain direction.

So, if one listens to the album with the expectation that one can smell smoke and grilled salmon in the piece “Fish fried on open fire,” one has slightly misunderstood what’s going on. It is not a matter of sensory impressions, but executive reminiscence of feelings. Instead, stories that relate to a specific sensory impression settle in. They are expressed through music, but each listener gets to hear and understand these stories individually. There are the nuances, gradients, moods, and there is always something new between the tones creating subtle twists.

Yelena Eckemoff is not a jazz pianist of afro-american tradition. She is classical trained, and her compositional focus is on the late romanticism and impressionism – a tradition which is alive and well in Russia. These influences are connected with a succinct and lyrical feeling, with some chord smoldering, with sometimes provocative and economical improvisations. And with an instrumentation or coloring – again as a syna aesthetic twist! – this is a contemporary Scandinavian Jazz by the way of Russian romantic. Yelena Eckemoff is not a strong rhythm designer and needs not the left hand for time keeping. But for this very reason, the rhythmic figures with which Antti Lotjonen (b) and Olavi Louhivuori (dr) are entrusted to create, prove to be all more sustainable. Her pedal culture and articulation on the piano are markedly of classical piano; and more intense work of shading rich, often pale colors, is entrusted to Verneri Pohjola‘s trumpet, or to metallic primal sound cascades of Panu Savolainen‘s vibraphone, which sometimes convey amazing phonetic contrasts with the piano.

Yelena Eckemoff’s Blooming Tall Phlox is a double album. First CD limits its subject to summer impressions only, with songs like “Apples laid out on the floor” or “Sleeping in the tent.” The second CD is dedicated to winter – but without an impression of cold. That would be much too superficial and naturalistic. Even the winter pieces are full of warmth and fragrance: no bells ringing sleigh rides through icy cold; instead there is “Smoke from the hot tea,””Clementines and candies on Christmas tree,” and the “Scented candles and sparkling wine.”  Yelena Eckemoff does not adhere to summer and winter clichés. She does not want to generate a general consensus about what associates with which. She wants to tell very personal stories in her own language that is easy to understand, the stories in which everyone can discover his own recollections through these scents and join in with his own memory.

Botanisch ist Blooming Tall Phlox nicht ganz eindeutig. Es könnte sich um den Hohen Staudenphlox (Phlox paniculata, auch Rispige Flammenblume oder Herbstflieder genannt) handeln. Aber weil Yelena Eckemoff in Russland aufgewachsen ist und Phlox paniculata dort in der freien Wildbahn eigentlich nicht vorkommt, könnte eventuell Phlox sibirica gemeint sein. Oder eine internationale Zierpflanze, wie sie in zahllosen Gärten rund um den Planeten verbreitet ist.
Aber botanische Fragen sind unpassende Spitzfindigkeiten, wenn es um Musik und Synästhesie geht. Yelena Eckemoffs Phlox ist eher ein Topos der eigenen Erinnerung als eine reale Pflanze. Überhaupt geht es ja in der kunstvollen Beziehung zwischen Natur und Musik (wie schon Beethoven, seine 6. Sinfonie kommentierend, schrieb) eher um den Ausdruck von Empfindungen als um Malerei. Yelena Eckemoff will keine suggestiven Analogien zur Farbigkeit der

Blume hervorrufen. Ihre Musik bezieht sich stattdessen auf einen intimen, körpernahen Bereich der Erinnerung: die Welt der Gerüche.
Wie aber übersetzt man Sinnesreize in andere Sinnesreize, also etwa Düfte in etwas Hörbares? Es gibt bekanntlich Menschen, bei denen Klänge Farbeindrücke erzeugen, die also eine Musik als gelb oder pink empfinden und immer Schwierigkeiten haben, die Zusammenhänge zwischen Farben und Musik anderen Menschen zu erklären. Von analogen Kurzschlüssen zwischen Klängen und Düften ist bisher nichts bekannt, und Yelena Eckemoff spekuliert auch keinem Mythos nach. Ihre Musik ist eher eine Arbeit an der im Jazz sehr weit verbreiteten Idee, eine Geschichte zu erzählen und damit eine emotionale

Situation zu erzeugen, die durch den Horizont, den ein suggestiver Titel eröffnet, eine bestimmte Richtung bekommt.
Wer also das Album mit der Erwartung hört, dass etwa bei dem Stück „Fish Fried on Open Fire“ plötzlich alles nach Rauch und gegrilltem Lachs riecht, hat etwas missverstanden. Es geht nicht um Sinneseindrücke, sondern um erinnerte Gefühle. Also um Geschichten, die sich an einen bestimmten Sinneseindruck anlagern. Durch die Formulierung mit Musik aber bekommt jeder, der sich darauf einlässt, einen eigenen Vorschlag unterbreitet. Nuancen, Verläufe, Stimmungen und immer wieder neue Zwischentöne und subtile Wendungen entstehen.

Yelena Eckemoff ist keine Jazz-Pianistin in einem afroamerikanischen Sinne. Sie ist klassisch ausgebildet, und ihr kompositorischer Fokus ist von Spätromantik und Impressionismus geprägt – also von einer Tradition, die in Russland lebendig war und ist. Diese Einflüsse verbindet sie mit einer prägnanten und lyrischen, aber wenig akkordschwelgerischen, zuweilen pointierten und sparsamen Improvisationskultur. Und mit einer Instrumentation beziehungsweise Farbgebung – schon wieder so eine synästhetische Wendung! –, die viel vom zeitgenössischen skandinavischen Jazz und von der russischen und skandinavischen Romantik gelernt hat. Yelena Eckemoff ist keine stark strukturierende Rhythmikerin und braucht die linke Hand nicht vorwiegend fürs Time Keeping. Aber gerade darum wirken rhythmische Figuren, mit denen sie Antti Lötjönen (b) und Olavi Louhivuori (dr) betraut, umso nachhaltiger. Ihre Anschlagskultur und Artikulationsweisen am Klavier sind klassisch geprägt – umso intensiver wirken die schattierungsreichen, oft fahlen Farben, die Verneri Pohjola auf der Trompete produziert, oder die metallisch grundierten Klangkaskaden von Panu Savolainen am Vibrafon, die zuweilen gerade durch die klangliche Nähe zum Klavier erstaunliche Kontraste vermitteln.

Yelena Eckemoffs Blooming Tall Phlox ist ein Doppelalbum. Es beschränkt seinen Themenkreis nicht auf sommerliche Eindrücke wie „Apples Laid Out on the Floor“ oder „Sleeping In the Tent“. Die zweite CD ist dem Winter gewidmet – allerdings ohne einen Eindruck von Kälte erzeugen zu wollen. Das wäre viel zu vordergründig und naturalistisch. Auch die Winter-Stücke sind voller Wärme und Duft: keine glöckchenklingelnden Schlittenfahrten durch klirrende Kälte, stattdessen „Smoke from the Hot Tea”, „Clementines And Candies on Christmas Tree” und „Scented Candles And Sparkling Wine”. Yelena Eckemoff steuert keine Sommer- und Winter-Klischees an. Sie will nicht mit landläufigen Assoziations-Anstößen einen allgemeinen Konsens über das Gehörte erzeugen. Sondern sie will in einer eigenen Klangsprache sehr persönliche Geschichten möglichst allgemein verständlich erzählen. Geschichten, in denen jeder eigene Erinnerungen und Duftnoten auffinden und zu etwas Eigenem zusammenfügen kann.
