This is the fourth time I listen to Yelena Eckemoff’s leadership works after “Yelena Eckemoff Trio / Glass Song (release of year 2013),” “Yelena Eckemoff Quintet / In the Shadow of a Cloud (2017),” “Yelena Eckemoff / Desert (2018) This is the fourth album I review after “Yelena Eckemoff Quintet / In the Shadow of a Cloud” (each with a separate page). Although Eckemoff’s music is not exactly to my taste, I bought this album  because of the backing members (Eric Harland and Ben Street). I don’t know the name of the other member, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, but I searched on my own blog and found “Matt Wilson Quartet + John Medeski / Gathering Call (14 years, has a separate page)” and “Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom / Glitter Wolf (1964, see separate page). This is the first time I heard Japanese shakuhachi player Koga Masaru.
The music on this album mainly consists of non-4-beat tunes, but there are also some tunes that develop into 4-beat and free style tunes. As in the previous three albums, Eckemoff seems to have composed the pieces with the members in mind, but her own piano playing was kept to a minimum and Knuffke and Harland played to their heart’s content instead, which was a very nice touch. I think it’s probably because she knows her technical limits, but the depth and  gracefulness of her performance is working. Of course, she can play it as it is, so I don’t feel boring or unsatisfactory, and depending on the song, the electric piano with marimba-like tone and the electric celesta are nice addition to the music. Knuffke and Harland also play actively, as if they are responding to Eckemoff’s expectations, and Street’s solid bass playing, which is almost exclusively backing but switches between wood and electric depending on the song, is also very pleasing. Koga’s shakuhachi, which sounds like a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, blends into the performance without any sense of discomfort.
Although CD1 and CD2 are a total of 89 minutes long, the music is relatively slow, but Harland’s endless ideas and technique, along with his organic drumming with a lot of notes, made it possible to enjoy the whole performance without being bored at all.
In addition to such performances, the recording of this work is, as usual, so well recorded that each instrument sounds so good that I fell in love with it, and the balance is so perfect that I felt it was superb from an audio standpoint.

エレーナ・エケモフのリーダー作を聴くのは「Yelena Eckemoff Trio / Glass Song（13年）」「Yelena Eckemoff Quintet / In the Shadow of a Cloud（17年）」「Yelena Eckemoff / Desert（18年）」（各別頁あり）に次いで4枚目。エケモフの音楽性が自分の好みにバッチリというわけではないのだが、本作もバックのメンバー（エリック・ハーランド、ベン・ストリート）に釣られて購入した。他のメンバーでコルネットのカーフ・ナフクは名前を覚えていないけど、自ブログで検索したら「Matt Wilson Quartet + John Medeski / Gathering Call（14年、別頁あり）」「Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom / Glitter Wolf（19年、別頁あり）」に参加しているのが見つかった。日本人の尺八奏者コガマサルはこれが初聴き。
その演奏は非4ビート曲をメインに、4ビートやフリー調に場面展開する曲もあり。エケモフが予めメンバーを想定して作曲しているような印象を受けるのは過去3作品と同様なのだが、自分のピアノは控えめにして、代わりにナフクとハーランドに存分にプレイしてもらっているのが実にいい塩梅。おそらくテクニック的な限界を知っているからこその手段だと思うけど、その奥ゆかしさが功を奏している。もちろんそれなりには弾けているので、つまらなさや物足りなさを感じることはないし、曲によってのエレピやヴァイブ、マリンバ的な音色のエレクトリック・チェレスタもいいアクセント。またナフクとハーランドも、エケモフの期待に応えるかのようにアクティブなプレイで聴かせてくれるし、ほとんどバッキングに徹しているけれど、曲によりウッドとエレベを持ち替えながら弾いているストリートの堅実なベースにも好感が持てるし、いかにもといった感じのコガの尺八が違和感なく演奏に溶け込んでいるも素晴らしい。
CD1とCD2でトータル89分の長丁場ではあるけれど、比較的ゆったり目の曲調が多いながらも、ハーランドの尽きることのないアイデアとテクニックを駆使した音数が多く有機的なドラミングのおかげで、通しで聴いても全く退屈せずに楽しめた。
そんな演奏に加えて、本作は録音も例によって各楽器が惚れ惚れするほどに良い音で録れているし、バランスも完璧で、オーディオ的にも極上気分を味わえた。

This is the latest work of Yelena Eckemoff (Moscow native,) whose “Yelena Eckemoff Quintet / In the Shadow of a Cloud” was released last year and was quite good. Because I think it was recorded in 2015, it is between time “Yelena Eckemoff Trio / Glass Song” and “In the Shadow of a Cloud.” Members Arild Andersen and Peter Erskine also participate in “Glass Song.” In this work is also joined Paul McCandless, who develops the performance which is also connected with Oregon, but as with Oregon, it is with higher temperature feeling.

Erskine’s long drum solo appears in the first song, and Andersen is very northern European, his accurate unequal backing and bass solo is coming along, and this all makes me feel like I was happy to buy [the album] as soon as possible. The song is mainly composed of non-4 beats such as some sort of scene (seems to be the theme of the desert,) but it also matches well with McCandless’s musicality and it is a really nice “salt plum.” Eckemoff’s lyrical rich piano in the low register also sounds very nice. In the 2nd and 5th songs, there are free sections in the middle. In the 4th song one can feel the Middle Eastern color, and I received a different impression from Eckemoff I heard so far. And percussion of Erskine that is overdubbed in some songs is also a good accent. There are so many layers, you can just enjoy it enough just listening to each person’s play. Naturally as a band it sounds harmoniously, entertaining with all the songs as good as possible.

Although, to my taste, 74 minutes in total feels feel a bit long. Since there are many similar songs of relaxed tempo, I think that it would be better to cut about three songs to sharpen up the album structure.

In addition to the wonderful imaginative performance, this work is also noteworthy in the goodness of recording. Each musical instrument is recorded very realistically, I did not feel any excessive loudness at all, and I was knocked out just by the goodness of the sound. Since the sound of the Erskine’s solo drums in the first track, it gives me goose bumps (especially when looking at the picture in the jacket, as with the concert of Sadao Watanabe Super Big Band in 2014, I see the use a set of 2 yellow Tamu 2 floors of TAMA.) I will keep this as the best recording candidate this year.

昨年リリースされた「Yelena Eckemoff Quintet / In the Shadow of a Cloud（17年、別頁あり）」がなかなか良かったエレーナ・エケモフ（モスクワ出身）の最新作。と思いきや録音は2015年なので、時系列的には「Yelena Eckemoff Trio / Glass Song（12年録音、別頁あり）」と「In the Shadow of a Cloud（16年録音）」の間ということになる。メンバーのアリルド・アンデルセンとピーター・アースキンは、「Glass Song」にも参加。本作ではそこにポール・マッキャンドレスも加わっているだけあって、Oregonにも通じる演奏が展開されているのだが、現在のOregonと同様に温度感は高い方。1曲目からアースキンの長めのドラムソロが用意されているし、アンデルセンのいかにも北欧的で正確無比なバッキングやベースソロも聴き応えがあって、早くも買ってよかったという気分にさせてくれる。楽曲は何らかの情景（砂漠がテーマとなっているようだ）が浮かんでくるような非4ビートが主体となっているけれど、それがまたマッキャンドレスの音楽性ともよくマッチしていて実にいい塩梅だし、肝心のエケモフの抒情性豊かなピアノも聴き応えがたっぷり。2曲目や5曲目では途中からフリーな展開になっていたり、4曲目には中東色も感じられたりして、これまで聴いてきたエケモフとはまた一味違った印象を受ける。それと曲によってはオーバーダブされているアースキンのパーカッションもいいアクセント。これだけのメンバーが揃っているだけあって、各人のプレイを聴いているだけでも充分楽しめるし、当然ながらバンドとしても調和の取れた演奏をしていて、どの曲をとってもいい感じで楽しませてくれる。ただしトータルで74分はちょっと長い気もするけどね。ゆったり目のテンポの似たような曲調が多いので、3曲ぐらいカットした方がメリハリのついたアルバム構成になってよかったのではと思う。
演奏が想像していた以上に素晴らしいのに加えて、本作は録音の良さも特筆もの。各楽器が非常にリアルに録れていながらもうるささは一切感じさせなくて、私としてはこの音の良さだけでもノックアウトされてしまった。特に1曲目でのアースキン・ソロのドラムの音は鳥肌ものなので（ジャケット内の写真を見ると2014年の渡辺貞夫スーパービッグバンドのコンサートと同様、TAMAの黄色い2タム2フロアのセットを使っている）、これは今年の最優秀録音候補にしておこう。

Purchase Peter Erskine. This is the first time I hear this is the female pianist leader, Yelena Eckemoff (originally from Moscow), but when I look at the independent label Yelena Music site, she has released 19 albums including classical works. She entered jazz and started to work with drums since “Yelena Eckemoff / The Call” in 2006, her eighth album, then “Yelena Eckemoff / Cold Sun (2010.) I have learned that Erskine is also participating in Flying Steps (2010). In addition to Mr. Vinding and Morten Lund, some other people are also participating in the past works, but this work is not based on ECM.

Ten songs by Eckemoff’s original score.

Due to Arild Andersen’s participation, it sounds and feels much like the ECM. A performance with a delicate and quiet feeling centered on non-4 beat reminds Erskine’s ECM albums as a leader: “Peter Erskine / You Never know (1993)” “/ Time Being (1994)” “/ As It Is (1996) “/” Juni (1999.)” Eckemoff’s piano has something in common with Keith Jarrett, and the influence of European pianists who inherit his style is felt. The performance in which Erskine is intertwined in an organic manner, makes us listen to any song as it is, but still a similar sort of similar song has been continued and so on, and in total there is about 73 minutes, so I get bored in the middle. Perhaps I expected this kind of performance before hearing it, I was in a position to enjoy the silent drumming of Erskine for the first time in the end, but the songs that are tapping snare and bass drums properly are the 5th song of 4 beats (there are also drum solos there.) There are only a few tracks that are seasoned with just a few banging cymbals, so even if there is no choice but to have a bold tune, this is not enough anything. Instead, Andersen shows the goodness of Gary Peacock’s reaction to Eckemoff’s playing, so you can barely hear it without breaking the tension till the very end, but if you can, half of the songs are dynamic. Even if it was a musical performance or a static song, I wanted them to show dynamic development within the song. But if you try Eckemoff which seems to be familiar with classical, it may be challenging itself to do such jazz with the piano trio of bass and drums. I see something good both in terms of making songs and technical aspects, so I think that it will be even better if you acquire a sense that you can also play dynamically with this, but since it is quite a matter of age, it is more like this, it may be impossible to expand the range of musicality.

As it is said, because the static music continues, the performance cannot be sympathized, but although each instrument has a gentle touch, the skeleton is solid and the sound has deepness and it is really nice. Especially the sound of the bass drum that sinks into the base and below is a special one. There is a place where this work can enjoy only by the goodness of this sound.

ピーター・アースキン買い。リーダーの女流ピアニスト、エレーナ・エケモフ（モスクワ出身）はこれが初聴きだけど、自主レーベルであるYelena Musicのサイトを見るとクラシカル（かな？）な作品も含めて、これまでに19枚のアルバムをリリースしているんだね。ドラムス入りのジャズ作品は2006年の「Yelena Eckemoff / The Call」以降のようで、本作が8枚目にあたるのだが、その中の「Yelena Eckemoff / Cold Sun（10年）」「Yelena Eckemoff / Flying Steps（10年）」にもアースキンが参加しているのを今知った。過去作品には他にもマッズ・ヴィンディングやモーテン・ルンドといったそそられる面々が参加しているのだが、本作のベースはECM以外で弾いているのには出会える機会の少ないアリルド・アンデルセン（わたし的には「Carsten Dahl, Arild Andersen, Jon Christensen / Space is the Place（12年、別頁あり）」以来）が担当しているのが興味深い。

エケモフのオリジナルだけで全10曲。

アンデルセンが参加していることも関係してか、ECMの肌触りによく似たサウンドとなっている。非4ビートが中心の繊細で静寂感の漂う演奏は、ECMからのアースキンのリーダー作「Peter Erskine / You Never know（93年）」「同 / Time Being（94年）」「同 / As It Is（96年）」「同 / Juni（99年）」あたりとも共通するのだが、キース・ジャレットや彼のスタイルを継承しているヨーロッパのピアニストたちからの影響が感じられるエケモフのピアノに、アンデルセンとアースキンが有機的に絡み合っている演奏は、どの曲もそれなりにはいい感じで聴かせてくれるものの、これでもかというぐらいに似たような静的な曲が続いてしまっているし、トータルで約73分もあるので、私としては途中で退屈してしまう。おそらくこういう演奏だろうということは聴く前から予想していて、久しぶりにアースキンのサイレントなドラミングを楽しむ態勢ではいたのだが、ちゃんとスネアやバスドラを叩いている曲は4ビートの5曲目（ドラムソロもあり）等ごくわずかで、他は味付け程度にシンバルを叩いているだけの場面がほとんどなので、曲調がらそうせざるを得ないとしても、これではいくらなんでも物足りない。その代わりにアンデルセンが、エケモフのプレイに対してゲイリー・ピーコックばりの反応のよさを見せているので、かろうじて最後まで緊張の糸を切らさずに聴くことはできるけど、できれば半分ぐらいの曲は動的な演奏、あるいは静的な曲であったとしても曲中内でダイナミックな展開を見せてほしかった。でもクラシックにも精通していると思われるエケモフにしてみると、ベースとドラムスのピアノトリオでこのようなジャズをやること自体がチャレンジなのかも。曲作りに関してもテクニカルな面においてもいいものを持っているので、これで動的な演奏もできる感覚を身に付けるとさらによくなると思うのだが、けっこう年齢はいってそうな感じなので、これ以上に音楽性の幅を広げるのは無理なのかもしれない。

ということで演奏は静的な曲が続いているので共感できないのだが、録音は各楽器が優しいタッチながらも骨格はしっかりしているし、音にも深みがあって実にいいね。特にベースと下に沈み込むようなバスドラの音は特筆もの。本作はこの音の良さだけでも楽しめるといったところがある。
