Russian-American pianist Yelena Eckemoff keeps showing off her taste, class and ability to pick her fellow musicians.  After the album she recorder with Nordic partners, she has created a new album with American musicians in a quartet format.

Compared with the previous CD Everblue, the main solo instrument is also drastically different – from the saxophone of Tore Brunborg – to the violin of Mark Feldman. The rhythm section goes from Jon Cristensen to a legendary  drummer  Billy Hart. Ben Street – a refined double bass player that has been actively involved with Hart over the last few years – fills the void left by absence of Arild Anderson.

The title of the CD, Leaving Everything Behind, refers to the pianist’s departure from Russia, which happened in 1991. She arrived to the USA with her husband, practically penniless and they shared a painful experience of leaving behind their sons in Moscow without knowing when they will be able to see them again. This experience shapes the album’s concept: the tracks, by the pianist, were all composed a long time ago, some even in the ‘80s; each composition is accompanied by a poem, by Eckemoff as well; and the paintings displayed on the cover are also fruits of her labors.

The songs fuse together jazz and classical sensitivity with a great balance, which is usual for Eckemoff, but in this case  it is even more highlighted by the fact that the compositions date to a time when the pianist was not that familiar with jazz, and also by the presence of the violin as the solo instrument. Feldman stands out right from the “Prologue” and – even if with the sophisticated and often nervous solos typical of his style – frequently weaves plots of chamber lyricism: listen for example to “Ocean of Pines”,  where Feldman’s notes sound at ease over the melody played by the piano and the double bass.

In general, Street and Hart are those who offer more jazzier element – listen to the central part of the last track, “A Date in Paradise”, which is otherwise dominated by the violin – since Eckemoff’s piano has a more classical edge, even though it can offer authentic and original jazz moments, like the solo in “Rising from Within”, one of the tracks that date back to the ‘80s and were therefore created under different influences. Just like the title track, a successful melody that takes great advantage of Hart’s wonderful work and that really embodies the album, in which the fusion of styles is, in its complexity, as captivating and elegant, as multifaceted enough to ensure continuous attention of the audience.

Continua a mostrare gusto, classe e capacità di scegliersi i compagni di avventura l’eclettica pianista russo-americana Yelena Eckemoff, la quale dopo album con partner nordeuropei -Glass Songs, in trio, e Everblue, in quartetto -realizza adesso questo lavoro con musicisti statunitensi.

Rispetto al precedente CD cambia drasticamente anche il primo strumento solista -là il sassofono di Tore Brunborg -qua il violino di Mark Feldman. Alla ritmica, per non far rimpiangere Arild Andersen e Jon Christensen, troviamo uno storico protagonista della batterista qual è Billy Hart, affiancato da Ben Street, raffinato contrabbassista che con Hart ha lavorato attivamente negli ultimi anni.

Il titolo del CD, Leaving Everything Behind, rimanda alla dipartita della pianista dalla Russia, avvenuta nel 1991, quando giunse negli Stati Uniti assieme al marito quasi senza denaro e lasciando dolorosamente i figli a Mosca, senza sapere quando avrebbe potuto rivederli. Quell’esperienza caratterizza il concetto dell’album: i brani, ovviamente della pianista, sono tutti composti nel passato remoto, in alcuni casi addirittura negli anni Ottanta; ciascuna composizione è completata da una poesia, sempre della Eckemoff; e ancora di sua realizzazione sono i dipinti rappresentati in copertina.

Le musiche fondono con grande equilibrio sensibilità jazzistica e classica, cosa usuale per la Eckemoff ma che in questo caso è esaltata da un lato dal fatto che le composizioni risalgono a quando la pianista non aveva ancora molta familiarità con il jazz, dall’altro dalla presenza come solista di uno strumento qual è il violino. Feldman infatti svetta fin dal “Prologue” e -pur con gli assoli sofisticati e spesso nervosi che lo caratterizzano -sviluppa spesso trame di lirismo cameristico: si ascolti esemplarmente “Ocean of Pines,” nel quale la sua voce svaria libera sull’elegante tappeto costruito dal pianoforte e dal contrabasso.

In generale, sono Street e Hart a fornire l’elemento più propriamente jazzistico -e qui si ascolti invece la parte centrale della traccia conclusiva, “A Date in Paradise,” per il resto melodicamente dominata dal violino -dato che anche il tocco pianistico della Eckemoff ha molto di classico, sebbene sappia anche offrire momenti squisitamente ed originalmente jazzistici, come l’assolo in “Rising from Within,” uno dei brano risalenti agli anni Ottanta e perciò nati con ben altre suggestioni. Così come la title track, riuscitissima melodia che qui però si avvale del superbo lavoro di Hart e che perciò è davvero l’emblema di un album nel quale la fusione di stili è, nella sua complessità, tanto accattivante ed elegante, quanto sufficientemente sfaccettata da non far cadere l’attenzione.

Two years after the excellent Glass Song, realized as a trio, the pianist Yelena Eckemoff, originally from Moscow but living in the USA for more than twenty years, is expanding the band while still maintaining the same cultural Nordic base: to the two Scandinavian music legends Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen, she is adding the saxophonist Tore Brunborg, to assemble a quartet characterized by a meditative style and an evocative lyricism that are typically Nordic.

The compositions of this Everblue are almost all by the pianist (with the exception of “Prism” and “Man”, by Andersen), who is clearly on the same wavelength with her partners, and creates music compositions that let the other musician express themselves very naturally: slow tempo of the music is perfect for the long notes – although a little overused of a very good Brunborg – spaces that open up and offer to Andersen numerous chances to make the strings of his double bass sound wonderfull.

To all of this, Eckemoff adds a coherent piano approach, yet not that Nordic, since it is less free and dissonant but very melodic, a bit classical, delicate to the touch and rich in light persistent expressiveness. The pianist, furthermore, leaves ample space to her colleagues, promoting an excellent group work.

The result is a sophisticated album, obviously excellent from the point of view of the execution, maybe slightly uniform and with few memorable moments, but never less the album is really enjoyable and the audience is suggested to listen to the music with more attention than they might think such album may seem to require at the first glance.

A due anni di distanza dall’ottimo Glass Song, realizzato in trio, la pianista Yelena Eckemoff, moscovita da oltre vent’anni stabilitasi negli Stati Uniti, allarga la formazione mantenendone l’impianto culturale: ai due monumenti della musica scandinava Arild Andersen e Jon Christensen aggiunge infatti il sassofonista Tore Brunborg, per formare un quartetto dalla cifra meditativa e dal lirismo evocatico tipicamente nordici. 

Le composizioni di questo Everblue sono quasi tutte della pianista (fanno eccezione solo “Prism” e “Man,” di Andersen), la quale è palesemente sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda dei suoi partners, creando situazioni che ben si adattano alla loro sensibilità espressiva: tempi lenti, adatti alle note lunghe di un Brunborg molto bravo ma anche un po’ stretto nel cliché, spazi che si aprono e garantiscono ad Andersen numerose occasioni per far risuonare in modo meraviglioso le corde del proprio contrabbasso. 

A tutto questo la Eckemoff aggiunge un approccio pianistico coerente e tuttavia non molto nordeuropeo, in quanto meno libero o dissonante e invece assai melodico, un po’ classico, delicato nel tocco e ricco di leggeri ostinati espressivi. La pianista, inoltre, lascia molto spazio ai compagni, favorendo un lavoro di gruppo eccellente. 

Ne vien fuori un album sofisticato, ovviamente eccellente dal punto di vista esecutivo, forse un po’ uniforme e con pochi momenti di memorabile impatto, ma godibile e da ascoltare con un’attenzione maggiore di quella che in prima approssimazione può sembrare richieda.

A Russian of classical education, but since 1991 she moved to the USA and devoted herself increasingly to jazz, the pianist Yelena Eckemoff has been making trio albums with talented formations for some years, of which the latter – with two authentic “legends” such as Arild Andersen and Peter Erskine – it seems the spearhead.
The music is all of the pianist’s pen and is certainly of excellent workmanship, even if eclectic and diversified. The general figure – as evidenced also by the titles – is situated between the abstract and intimist expressiveness of a Northern European style and lyricism. The two factors are both rooted in the formation of Eckemoff and the first fits perfectly with the poetics of his two companions, so as to interact perfectly and give rise to songs now characterized by one (the title track and the first pieces in the lineup), now on the other (“Elegy,” “Sweet Dream”), now pleasantly hybrids, like the spectacular “Polarity,” interpreted mainly by Andersen, or the delightful, conclusive “March Rain,” which on the other hand has the pianist as its protagonist.

The latter showcases the highest level of quality, with a light but decisive touch, plurality of stylistic elements and great Bley’s ability to manage pauses, as well as considerable lyrical fantasy in improvisations and a willingness to dialogue with partners put to good use especially with a sumptuous Andersen as usual. The stylistic references, in addition to the already mentioned Bley, are the masters of the Northern European school as Bobo Stenson and, for some stylistic elements, Jarrett.

As always, there is little to add to his well-known mastery of the drummer: deep sound, constant presence, prolonged solos with apiece of skill in “Polarity.” An ideal partner for anyone, excellent, but subtler, Peter Erskine, is very well suited to the context of rare faction lyrics and emerging on tiptoe in several occurrences – for example in the delicate solo of “Glass Song” against Andersen’s noisy background.

A record, therefore, perhaps not very original but still personal and, above all, of superior quality, with peaks of excellence.

Russa di formazione classica, ma ormai dal 1991 trasferitasi negli USA e dedita crescentemente al jazz, la pianista Yelena Eckemoff da alcuni anni sta realizzando album in trio con formazioni talentuose, di cui quest’ultimo – con due autentiche “leggende” quali Arild Andersen e Peter Erskine – pare la punta di diamante.La musica è tutta della penna della pianista ed è senz’altro di ottima fattura, ancorché eclettica e diversificata. La cifra generale – come testimoniato peraltro anche dai titoli – si situa tra l’espressività astratta e intimista di stampo nordeuropeo e il lirismo. I due fattori sono entrambi radicati nella formazione della Eckemoff e il primo si sposa perfettamente con la poetica dei suoi due compagni, così da interagire perfettamente e dare origine a brani caratterizzati ora dall’uno (la title track e i primi pezzi in scaletta), ora dall’altro (“Elegy,” “Sweet Dream”), ora piacevolmente ibridi, come la spettacolare “Polarity,” interpretata prevalentemente da Andersen, o la deliziosa, conclusiva “March Rain,” che viceversa ha per protagonista la pianista.

Quest’ultima mette in vetrina qualità di altissimo livello, con un tocco lieve ma deciso, pluralità di stilemi e grande capacità bleyana di gestione delle pause, nonché considerevole fantasia lirica nelle improvvisazioni e una disposizione al dialogo con i partner messa a frutto soprattutto con un come al solito sontuoso Andersen. I riferimenti stilistici, oltre al già citato Bley, sono i maestri della scuola nordeuropea come Bobo Stenson e, solo per alcuni stilemi, Jarrett.

Del contabbassista, come sempre, c’è poco da aggiungere alla maestria che gli è ben nota: suono profondo, presenza costante, assoli prolungati con un pezzo di bravura in “Polarity”. Un partner ideale per chiunque. Eccellente, ma più defilato, Peter Erskine, adattissimo al contesto di lirica rarefazione e che emerge in punta di piedi in più occcasioni – ad esempio nel delicato assolo di “Glass Song,” sullo sfondo rumoristico di Andersen.

Un disco, quindi, forse non originalissimo ma comunque personale e, soprattutto, di qualità superiore, con punte d’eccellenza.
