“Colors” is another album of an outstanding and extremely active American, born in Moscow pianist, composer, but also painter and poet, Yelena Eckemoff.

She has been living and creating in the USA since 1991, where she enjoys an exceptional reputation today. She is a very creative artist, who gathers the most renowned jazz musicians around her. Her substantial albums are recorded in a breathtaking – for every jazz lover – line-up. She is a classically educated musician with a perfect effect on the path of improvised music. The pianist’s activities in the field of jazz music take place according to strictly defined rules, free from the influences of classical jazz keyboard masters, and showing her a personal way of perceiving improvised music. Her subsequent albums, tracked by the best sound engineers, are recorded in prestigious studios in the USA and Europe and are released on her own label, L & H Production.

A phenomenal artist who has albums with many excellent musicians of the world jazz scene (including Billy Hart, Tore Brunborg, Ben Street, Chris Potter, Adam Rogers, Peter Erskine, Paul McCandless, Ralh Alessi, and Joey Baron), after two brilliant albums released in 2018 (full of climate Arabic motifs: “Desert”, and saturated with spiritual raptures: “Better Than Gold and Silver”), this time she proposes the album recorded in a duet with the French master of drums and percussions, Manu Katché.

Yelena Eckemoff prepares her every album comprehensively, simultaneously publishing essays on music included on the album, as well as, being a talented painter, she designs the album artwork. Each of her albums, from the beginning to the end, is an original work with a thoughtful concept and message. This is also true for the album “Colors” recorded at La Buissonne Studios in the French Provence.

In 2017, Eckemoff released “Blooming Tall Phlox,” a double-disc album referring to fragrances and recorded in Finland. This time the pianist was inspired by the magic of various colors around us and in her musical story she showed them as successive stages of life. Each of the 14 tracks that fill up 80 minutes of the album, represents a different stage of life in chronological order.

For purity, like the white of a canvas stretched on a frame and waiting to be filled with colors, refers to the opening White.

“Orange” is in turn a reflection of youthful energy and enthusiasm, and subsequent stages of life represented by colors that can evoke associations with acquired experiences, experiences and various accompanying states of mind (“Green”, “Blue”, “Red”).

That’s how we get to the autumn of life started with the theme “Yellow”, associated with the color of fallen leaves, and finally to the most meaningful “Black” crowning this full reflection and reflection wandering through life.

Both for Yelena Eckemoff and Manu Katché (despite the fact that he planned a joint album with Keith Jarrett at that time), “Colors” is the first album recorded in the formula of a duet with percussion. The artists create an ideal team that drives each other. Katché not only follows the Eckemoff’s keyboard and creates an atmosphere around the piano, but often seems to harmonious and melodic. His charisma and enthusiasm, felt in his playing, perfectly harmonizes with the impressionistic, full of musical poetics style of the pianist.

Eckemoff with great commitment approached the concept of the album, giving the appropriate color to the various stages of the musical story: “Everything is filtered through my inner feelings and expressed through melody and harmony, but not about myself. I have watched many older people, including my dear parents, during their last journey. “

“Colors” is 80 minutes of beautiful and deep music. It is also another proof of Yelena Eckemoff’s unlimited ability in terms of sound creations.

Artystka od 1991 roku mieszka i tworzy w USA, gdzie dziś cieszy się wyjątkową renomą. Jest bardzo kreatywną artystką, skupiającą wokół siebie najznakomitszych muzyków jazzowych. Jej kolejne albumy nagrywane są w składach zapierających dech w piersi każdemu miłośnikowi jazzu. Jest klasycznie wykształconym muzykiem, z doskonałym efektem stąpającym po ścieżce muzyki improwizowanej. Poczynania pianistki na polu muzyki jazzowej odbywają się według ściśle określonych przez nią zasad, wolnych od wpływów klasycznych mistrzów jazzowej klawiatury, a ukazujących jej osobisty sposób postrzegania muzyki improwizowanej. Zarówno dla Yeleny Eckemoff jak Manu Katché (mimo iż owego czasu planował wspólny album z Keithem Jarrettem) “Colors” to pierwszy album nagrany w formule duetu z perkusją. Katché nie tylko podąża za klawiaturą Eckemoff i tworzy atmosferę wokół fortepianu, ale niejednokrotnie zdaje się współgrać w zakresie melodyki i harmonii.
