"Each [Eckemoff] release has its own charm and expression, but always bears the personal signature of the composer/pianist. For Better Than Gold And Silver she has come up with something very special. All-Star-Team succeeds in presenting an extremely expressive music on the highest level, which absolutely does justice to the Christian content of the psalms. And this has been accomplished absolutely with a beautiful and strongly harmonic lining, that often sounds truly like "Joy To The World", music that spreads the Christian messages full of hope. Nevertheless, this is not church music in this sense, nothing sacred, but high-quality jazz using the psalms chosen by Eckemoff." ~ Wolfgang Giese fot Music An Sich

First short review of Better Than Gold and Silver published on August 29th at AAJ by Michael Bailey: "Sacred music comes in many forms and from many inspirations. Historically, it has always been a cornerstone of our shared musical story. Regardless of one's conviction, this tradition is a part of us and will continue to be. Russian composer and pianist Yelena Eckemoff was an atheist in the former Soviet Union before coming to the United States seeking material, cultural, and spiritual freedom. The latter she found in Christianity, first through the Russian Orthodox text and then the King James Bible, from where she takes her settings of selected Psalms. Eckemoff breaks up the lengthy Psalm 119, dispersing it among Psalms 58, 110, 126, 131, and 147. The composer has divided her project over two CDs, one with vocals, and the second, instrumental only. She employs the tenor voice of Tomas Cruz and mezzo soprano Kim Mayo, who solo and duet throughout. Her band is stellar, including: trumpeter Ralph Alessi, guitarist Ben Monder, violinist Christian Howes, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Joey Baron. The music is sublimely introspective with an angular trajectory and evolution. Quietly contemplative and deeply moving."

"Russian jazz pianist Yelena Eckemoff spans a wide spectrum on her new album "In The Shadow Of A Cloud". The spectrum ranges from classical music to jazz improvisations. Friends of "Jazz without frontiers" will enjoy it. For the average listener, it is probably a bit too much of freedom that the woman from Moscow offers here. Not for ears that just listen quickly. You have to get used to this mix and then you will enjoy the double CD."

New "Blooming Tall Phlox" review in German magazine, Jazzpodium, July issue, written by Ulfert Goeman.

"Verneri Pohjola, flh, tp, Panu Savolainen, vib, Antti Lรถtjรถnen, b, and Olavi Louhivuori, dr, perc, spent three-day-long weekend together with the pianist, idea giver, and composer, sharing all their time in music with one another, resulting in recording of an immense laid-back and nevertheless deeply profound musicโ€ฆ Music, which one does not need to classify, which is individual, intelligent, full of surprises! She is a musician who puts her bandmates at ease and makes them nearly oblivious to surroundings and inspires them to form music that, while arising from almost informal meeting, deserves large audience."

06.22.2017 at 10:54 am
Translated from German:

Yelena Eckemoff opens her newest album "Blooming Tall Phlox" with ballad of the same name. It is her already tenth album within short six years. Eckemoff has used this time to create her completely own take on jazz. Each title of this album evokes a memory of a certain smell. This makes the album to be not just an acoustic experience, but only an olfactory one since it immerses listener into the matching world of smell. Titles such as "Apple's Laid Out On The Floor" or "Fish Fried On Open Fire" speak for themselves. The album is divided into two parts and in the chapters "Summer-Smells" and "Winter-Smells", with the appropriate compositions for each season. The recording were done in 2013, following a meeting of Eckemoff with the drummer Olav Louhivuori, with whom she struck an instant vibe. Eckemoff has gathered the most talented Finnish musicians for this project. Verneri Pohjola plays the flugelhorn and trumpet. Antti Lรถtjรถnen is on the bass and Panu Savolainen is on the vibraphone. When band members improvise, they do so without restricting others band members, giving the record romantic, dreamy feel. With "Blooming Tall Phlox" the extraordinary Russian jazz pianist has published a beautiful, dreamy album. Once again she managed to harmonize everything in herself and pack it with a touch of mysticism. (Anja Klein)
