Yelena Eckemoff Quintet: In the Shadow of a Cloud - Jazz da Gamajazzdagama.comRobert Schumann once said that “…everything extraordinary that happens impresses me, and impels me to express it in music.” So saying, Schumann encapsulated his artistic vision as defining the Romantic era. New "Blooming Tall Phlox" review in German magazine, Jazzpodium, July issue, written by Ulfert Goeman.

"Verneri Pohjola, flh, tp, Panu Savolainen, vib, Antti Lötjönen, b, and Olavi Louhivuori, dr, perc, spent three-day-long weekend together with the pianist, idea giver, and composer, sharing all their time in music with one another, resulting in recording of an immense laid-back and nevertheless deeply profound music… Music, which one does not need to classify, which is individual, intelligent, full of surprises! She is a musician who puts her bandmates at ease and makes them nearly oblivious to surroundings and inspires them to form music that, while arising from almost informal meeting, deserves large audience."

Translated from German:

Yelena Eckemoff opens her newest album "Blooming Tall Phlox" with ballad of the same name. It is her already tenth album within short six years. Eckemoff has used this time to create her completely own take on jazz. Each title of this album evokes a memory of a certain smell. This makes the album to be not just an acoustic experience, but only an olfactory one since it immerses listener into the matching world of smell. Titles such as "Apple's Laid Out On The Floor" or "Fish Fried On Open Fire" speak for themselves. The album is divided into two parts and in the chapters "Summer-Smells" and "Winter-Smells", with the appropriate compositions for each season. The recording were done in 2013, following a meeting of Eckemoff with the drummer Olav Louhivuori, with whom she struck an instant vibe. Eckemoff has gathered the most talented Finnish musicians for this project. Verneri Pohjola plays the flugelhorn and trumpet. Antti Lötjönen is on the bass and Panu Savolainen is on the vibraphone. When band members improvise, they do so without restricting others band members, giving the record romantic, dreamy feel. With "Blooming Tall Phlox" the extraordinary Russian jazz pianist has published a beautiful, dreamy album. Once again she managed to harmonize everything in herself and pack it with a touch of mysticism. (Anja Klein)

Google Translation:

The pianist Yelena Eckemoff has been inspired by nature's fragrances for her tenth album. The title of each piece describes exactly what smell it is ("Wildflower Meadows" or "Fish Fried on open fire"). Musically the album is as diverse as the 15 title names on this double CD, which is divided into summer and winter parts. The vibraphone in "Apples laid out on the floor" lets the scent of the ripe fruits rise from the bottom upwards, the piano moves freely around this fragrance in the room, and bass and percussion surround the walls and
ceilings. The quintet, composed of Finnish musicians, acts around a piano and broadens it up. It stimulates dynamically and acts also in the tempo variable, there is then there is even a tango is to be heard ("Fish Fried on open fire"). The clean recording sounds transparent and open, the instruments are recorded very directly, resulting in a minimalist smaller room impression. But this is matter of taste. Yelena Eckemoff delivers a virtuoso and at the same time diverse song series - more than just the scent of nature.

Yelena Eckemoff Quintet: Blooming Tall Phlox - Jazz da Gamajazzdagama.comYelena Eckemoff is a singular musical voice. "Transfixed by the 98-minute album, I listened to Blooming Tall Phlox twice before researching the backstory of the unheralded but startlingly brilliant new release. I discovered that each of the selections is intended to evoke a different scent that Yelena Eckemoff recalls from her childhood in Russia. Whatever. I’m far more interested in the ingenious arrangements and stellar playing of Eckemoff and the young band of Finns who realize her vision. The cringey album trailer doesn't reflect the project's dazzling qualities."

"...Eckemoff's piano playing is a big part of the sound, of course. She tends to give more solo space to her guests, but she has plenty of shining minutes as soloist, as well as providing important musical glue holding the arrangements together. Verneri Pohjola adds lovely dynamics and mood to this audio treasure on trumpet and flugelhorn. Panu Savolainen’s stunning addition of xylophone throughout creates a textured or layered effects in the music, much like the painting on the cover; colorful and artistic. Olavi Louhivuori’s drums add a delicious, unpredictable flavor beneath the various tempos. He enhances the surprises that Eckemoff has in store for her listeners. She manages to blend classical technique and the sweet sounds of jazz like an expert baker...."

Translated from German to Engish, here is a review of "Leaving Everything Behind" in Jazzthing magazine, November - January issue 🙂

"Very prominent sidemen are a hallmark of the pianist Yelena Eckemoff, who has played in the past with musicians like Peter Erskine, Jon Christensen or Mark Turner. On 'Leaving Everything Behind' she interprets her own older titles, on her side the sensitive drummer Billy Hart and the gripping bassist Ben Street. But the most daring decision was to fill up the band with the violinist Mark Feldman, whose tone is between Wiener Kaffeehaus, Gypsy Soul and New Music and who often gives the music his own very special twist. Eckemoff herself is a pianist who focuses on impressionistic embedded particles (Spots Of Light), but also catchy songs like 'Love Train' (has nothing to do with the O'Jays hit) with space-grabbing chords. Own poems to each song and the cover painting from own hand complete the whole package."

"Leaving Everything Behind" hardly represents what most
people would classify as jazz. Of course, maybe it questions our preconceptions, too.
....More often, her music is abstract, suggesting rather than depicting deep currents of emotion, always with candor and originality."

"Yelena Eckemoff is a highly-gifted pianist/composer who lets violinist Mark Feldman shine on her Leaving Everything Behind (L&H Productions). She also has legendary drummer Billy Hart and bassist Ben Street moving things along in a jazz route... The result is an absolutely gorgeous classical/jazz synthesis that drips with pathos (especially “Tears Of Tenderness”). Evocative, romantic, with a sound that leans heavy on violin and piano/violin interplay, Leaving Everything Behind grows on you with repeated listenings."

Post about "Lions" CD in German blog 🙂
"Ich kann die Finger von dieser nicht lassen. Man soll ja mit Superlativen sparsam umgehen, aber hier bin ich gaaanz nah dran, eines zu verwenden. Was sie hier mit Billy Hart dr und Arild Andersen b hinlegt ist schlicht atemberaubend schön."
